Nielsen quits as Australian coach

Postby brod » Wed Sep 21, 2011 12:17 am

Tim Nielsen has stood down as Australia's coach after helping the side to a series victory in Sri Lanka. Nielsen, who took over from John Buchanan in 2007, made the announcement after Australia played out a draw in the final Test at the SSC in Colombo, saying he accepted it was time to go as part of the fall-out from last summer's 3-1 Ashes defeat.

His decision means Australia will have an interim head coach - possibly one of the assistants, Justin Langer or Steve Rixon - for their upcoming tour of South Africa. Nielsen faced the prospect of having to reapply for the job as head coach after the Argus review recommended a more wide-ranging brief for the team's mentor.

No surprises, but the rumour doing the rounds this morning is that Warney will be the next full time coach- Langer likely to do the Saffer tour.

No surprise really. Might have held on for this tour to avoid having a "coachless" team heading to Sri Lanka and despite poor on field showings I'm sure the team will remember his contribution fondly.

Always a tough gig for anyone coming in to the role at the time he did. Probably not as bad a coach as he's been painted in some circles - he must have been doing something right to get the gig in the first place.

I wouldn't have a clue how good a coach he is - or Buchanan for that matter. I mean who can tell, unless you're in the system.

LOL at Warnie for coach, how good would that be! Beer and pizza, couple of durries, have a bat and bowl if you can be ******, see you Saturday boys!!

Where have you been?

Warnie would have them all in a solarium, rubbing guave pulp with monkey spit extract into their skin, drinking purified Evian ( because the bottled stuff cant be trusted ) and wearing $700 Armani jeans that are that ripped that it looks like they've been stolen off of Joffa's clothesline.

Stuart MacGill threw Australian cricket's plan for life after Shane Warne into a state of confusion when he retired almost two years earlier than expected, the former national coach Tim Nielsen has said.

Nielsen revealed in an interview with ESPNcricinfo that the team expected MacGill to play on until the end of 2009, rather than ending his career in the middle of the 2008 West Indies tour.
