North Eastern Football League wooden spooner Brinkworth-Spalding-Redhill is pinning its hopes on a revival next year with the appointment of Damien Mellow to the senior coaching role. The NEFL Tigers last tasted success with premierships in 1999 and 2000 but it has been a drought ever since. Mellow played with distinction at Port Bulldogs during their premiership decade in the Spencer Gulf Football League before joining NAFA club Crystal Brook in 2004. As a playing coach he got the Roosters into grand finals against BMW in 2005 and Broughton-Mundoora in 2006 but lost on both occasions. He completed a fourth year as Crystal Brook playing coach in 2007 before eventually joining BSR as a player. With his playing career now almost certainly over he is looking forward to the challenge of coaching from the sidelines. The loss of Jason McKenzie to Kapunda next year is a major setback but Mellow remains unfazed by the prospects of going into a new season minus the star ruckman. “I think the club has got some great colts and both juniors and seniors have been in the grand finals in last couple of years,” he said. “So obviously there’s a fair bit of promise there with the kids so that’s one aspect I’m looking at. Obviously we need to go out and find a couple of players just to add to what is already there but hopefully I can just bring a bit of structure and a bit of enthusiasm to start pushing them up the ladder similar to way we did at Crystal Brook.” Mellow will kick-start the new season with a players meeting in Koolunga on October 28 when he will reveal his plans for the future which will include embarking on a rigorous pre-season campaign beginning on February 1.
