I didn't realise until recently that the Aussie icon Hills Hoist has been made in China for several years now. I guess that company would have dumped a stack of employees from the Edwardstown factory where the clotheslines were made and saved a truckload of money. Anyway, that pi$$es me off and I was wondering what famous Aussie products are now being made in China that other posters might get annoyed by. Blundstone boots is another example - terrible really.

Jeez I read this and made a beeline for my freezer and yanked out the frozen peas - made in NZ, frozen beans - made in Australia...phew! Bubble'n'squeak - made from Australian and Imported ingredients - gulp!

You do realise that product of New Zealand is more often than not Product of China and Packed in New Zealand? Many chinese companies backdoor onto the Australian Market via NZ who have psisweak labelling laws - not that our own are any better!

It all started during the 1980s as tariffs were wound down in the name of free trade.
It was inevitable from that decision that manufacturing would then move to the cheapest manufacturing base available.
That will be China while they refuse to float their currency and thus keep their manufacturing base cheap by world standards.

Will they ever float their currency?
Not unless they are somehow forced to, and I can't see how that could be done.

Add anti-dumping laws into that equation Psyber and the manufacturing plant I help run gets penalised for bringing aluminium extrusion into the country which, when cut and assembled in Adelaide, employs around 12 people.

It is and will be easier to import finished product direct, however we have an edge on our competitiors by being able to manufacture custom items in house that they can't. We get penalised for doing so though.

Yes, I was prepared to pay their prices when they were made in OZ, but now they are not I may as well buy from Rivers.

A few years ago I bought a pair of Blundstone boots from one of the last Australian made batches. I wear them two or three days a week and they are still good. My neighbour bought a pair last year that were made in China and they are almost stuffed already. I also still have a pair of Levi 501s that were made in the Elizabeth factory (that must be 20 years ago?) and they are still quite wearable although I can't get them on!

one of Australia favorite fishing rod is now made in china, the "UGLY STICK". the "ugly stick gold" was the first range of rods to be made over seas.
