Yes but theres no dfference between finishing 2nd or 3rd except 2nd wears home shorts (if theres a clash) and they get the "home team" change rooms.

Yes. Friday night preliminary final, the day before the inferior Victorian Grand Final. The winner gets an 8-day rest before the Grand Final is played in its rightful spot on a Saturday afternoon. You know it makes sense!

A Friday night prelim would be good, but with both teams playing on the previous Sunday in the Semis, is that enough of a break?

Just an idea - how about sharing the finals, including doubleheaders, in the first three weeks regardless of who is playing, much like many country leagues already have their set finals venues. Each club would get to host a final every three years, canteen, bar etc. Only problem potential is parking up to 15000 around suburban ovals. Perhaps Transadelaide could come to the party on those days?

I think we need to return to the 'old' Final 4 system of the the 50s & 60s.

Reduce the season length.

Play 1st Semi in first week (under lights @ Adelaide Oval) - Saturday
Play 2nd Semi in second week (under lights @ Adelaide Oval) - Friday
Play Prelim in third week (under lights @ Adelaide Oval) - Friday
Play GF in fourth week (under lights @ Adelaide Oval) - Saturday

Never liked that set-up LEH. Why does the team that finish 3rd, gets to play the lower team and if wins get's a weeks rest whilst that finished 2nd plays a tougher match and has to front up the next week?

The 3rd team has to play immediately after the Minor Round ends.
I like the idea that any team in the Finals has a realistic chance of winning the Flag, the current system makes it very difficult to come from the Knockout Match (only been done twice, once from 5th & once from 4th) in nearly 40 years.

Most other 'Semi Final' set ups across most sports provides the opportunity to be fair on all competitors.
The GAYFL set up isn't fair, the NRL is worse.

I think if you make the finals, why not have an 'even playing field'?
BTW The Bays (due to the bye) have had a week's rest this year.

Both teams get the same length break, so neither would be (dis)advantaged. Anyhoo, you could play the semis on the Saturday/night.

Because the teams work all minor round to earn an advantage.

So is it the team finishing third or the the teams coming from the elimination that concerns you?

The team finishing third playing in week one of the finals, well, the team finishing second does too.

The teams coming from the "knockout match" should be earning their passage through.

Not sure what your point is.

What's wrong with getting an advantage from finishing higher? It's part of the fabric of the game. 1 in 20 winning from the elim is about right I'd say. Couple the advantage of the higher sides with the fact they're just better football teams and I'd say the stats back up the system. Do we really want to wipe away the whole minor round and give South, who scrape in with results going their way on 8 wins, the same chance as Central who won 17 games and qualified 2 months ago?

5 day break from semi final day to prelim day would be an issue. I know it's the same for both sides, but I would be certain we'd see more blokes out injured by having 2 less days to recover, something nobody wants.
