Finals Experience

Postby johntheclaret » Wed Sep 14, 2011 7:13 am

I am sure it's just me, but a lot of you fella's talk about finals experience as if it's an advantage.
Example The Bays and South game: what advantage is there for Glenelg in terms of Finals Experience? Surely it's just another game and wouldn't be any different if it was Rnd 23.

I can understand if it was the GF with a big crowd and GF nerves etc but where do Glenelg get an advantage after going out in straight sets for the last two years?

Not stirring, just an honest question

I don't think the bays have any advantage this week at all. Their past failures would be more of a hindrance than help.

South just have to treat it as another game for their inexperienced group take it as it comes.

Understand the point you are making jtc but finals are a different kettle of fish, the intensity goes up another notch and there is so much more riding on the end of it as opposed to just a minor round game, especially in an Elimination Final.

To have experienced blokes in the side that have tasted finals action, successfully or otherwise, is surely a good thing and beneficial to that side even if from just a mental perspective. Any advantage a side can get over the other will be taken.

interesting points made.

Glenelg's side is chock full of juniors who are all (mainly) premiership players at u18 or reserve level, so they know whats required to win them.

Some of the seniors, however dont seem to cope too well with the extra intensity.

Makes me think this game will be a bit of a learning experience for the panthers but if they adjust well early they have a big chance to win it.

Going out in straight sets doesn't enter into it. Glenelg has played at Footy Park in September for a few years now. The players know what to expect and will not be unsettled. OTOH the experience will be a complete novelty for the Panthers. This has to stand Glenelg in better stead.

However I think the factor of finals experience also extends to the coaching box. While Massie has some success coaching juniors, his experience is still dwarfed by Ronny's. This has to stand the Panthers in better stead.

All things considered I think this game is a 50/50 proposition. Get your money on the Panthers while they're paying more than $2.
