First time ever for Port, West, North and Sturt

Postby MagareyLegend » Mon Sep 12, 2011 7:18 pm

This year is the first time in SANFL history that neither one of Port, West, North or Sturt have made the finals.

Quite amazing really.

And I think that the past decade (2001 - 2010) is the first in which North has not won a flag (since they entered comp). (?)

That's a myth. That record was broken well and truly before 2000.

To expand on Grahaml's comment...

We missed out during the 1961-70 decade (although we won in 60 and in 71 ;) )
And if you use the argument that a decade is 00-09, we missed out between 1910 and 1919 (and won in 1920).

The current 20 year drought is the longest in the club's history. :(

We didn't win a flag between 1910 - 1919. We did play in 3 grand finals (1913,14 and 19) and also there was no official competition for 3 years (1916-18). We also didn't win a flag in our first decade.

Edit: make that four grand finals. The first Grand Final in 1919 was a draw.

Also I believe if you revert to the 0-9 decade theory you miss out in the 1890-1899 period.

So 1960 is not part of the 60's? I would have thought it was an integral part, being the first year of the 60's and all.

Whichever side of that argument you sit on, North don't have a premiership in every decade. Unless 0 years are like aces in blackjack, high or low as it suits. Lol.

Please don't. Lol.

Amazing though that the dogs have made finals 17 out of the last 18 years while clubs like West, North and South have missed out so often. Nearly 20 years you're talking more than one generation of footballers and administrators. In fact the way the SANFL is now many teams have a totally different lineup every 4-5 years. Still, the dogs (and Eagles too) have found a way to stay near the pointy end while other clubs struggle to get there at all, or at least to maintain it for more than one season.
