The qualification rules this year have been very messy. I can think of examples with players such as Pettigrew, Tambling and Rodan which all seemed to contradict one another. Cornes shouldn't be allowed to play this week, the swapping to the bottom place reserves side is something that should only be allowed when required and its not this week.

I'd be massively surprised if Cornes played reserves this week and qualified to be honest. I'm also surprised to hear the qualified guys who played AFL last week can play this week, so Callinan can in fact line up according to Partland's article anyway. I think that common sense dictates they should be able to play, seems stupid to make them sit out a week if they've qualified for finals. I wonder whether Callinan and Cornes both being allowed to play opens a huge can of worms here. If they can play, then clearly the SANFL are saying neither not being qualified nor having played AFL in the final round stops you from playing SANFL in the final minor round. If that's the case, someone like Scott Thompson could technically play for the Magpies this week if the Crows, Magpies and Thompson agreed to it.

Jai Bednall in his MMC column mentions that Callinan won't be available this week which sounds like the more likely scenario.

i went to that GF as a neutral and Skipworth was easily BOG, his run and carry that day was outstanding and one of the best GF performances Ive seen.

Not that it really matters, but 99% would say Cica was BOG, including myself and the club. If memory serves me correctly the club had Cicolella, Cooper, Skipworth as 1,2,3.

Cica's influence and intent as captain set the tone for the game in the first quarter and was the most influential thing that day, (just as many people overlook Roger James keeping Port in the game in first quarter of the 2004 prelim v St Kilda), which, given our previous few GF efforts, is why it is so highly regarded by Eagles supporters.

Skipworth definitely was damaging, but Cicolella's game was what kept our midfield out of it and got the Eagles going. We couldn't stop him getting clearances (and good clearances at that) but didn't need to stop Skipworth because someonw else would have been outside with time and space.

Here is an explanation from Greg Edwards taken from the nafc website re qualification for this week's round:

The rules state that if a player plays more than one AFL match in the matches immediately preceding the last SANFL minor round game, he is not eligible. Callinan and Henderson have only played one AFL match (prior to last week, they played in the SANFL), before the last SANFL minor round game, so they can play this week. Armstrong, Motlop and Wright have all played more than one AFL match before this week's game, so are ineligible. Callinan is eligible for the SANFL finals, as he has played 5 SANFL games, but Henderson is not eligible for finals. Armstrong, Motlop and Wright are all eligible to play for NAFC in the finals if we make it.

So Partland was correct after all re Callinan!
Piss weak SANFL and the CLOWNS who run it.

Something's wrong there, that sounded clear, concise and knowledgable. Not attributes you associate with the qualification rules.

Not a chance. Nothing to gain from a Centrals perspective and all loss for Henderson and Adelaide's perspective. I dare say Roy would rather see more of someone in the fight for finals spots than a cameo from someone who can't. But even if they asked, both Adelaide and Henderson would be emphatically against it.

thats what i would think but if Hynes and Havelberg dont come up he maybe tempted to play Henderson so he can keep the team playing to the same structures that he will be using in the second semi final.

Bad news for the Maggies if they keep their spot in the 5 and play finals:

Zac Milbank in The Advertiser wrote:After receiving injuries against Melbourne on Sunday, key forward John Butcher (hamstring) and defender Jacob Surjan (lacerated calf) have been ruled out of SANFL finals action for Port Magpies.

Butcher, in particular, could have been a real X Factor for Port Adelaide should they get through and he'd been able to play.

No temptation. Put a mid sized player there if you don't have a big. If we're that light on for key forwards bring Schell in.

More bad news for the Maggies with Ivan Maric declaring he wont play finals. Apparantly onnthe verge of joining Richmond and will be moving ASAP

Heard Butcher talking about his slight hamstring “twinge” on radio last night. He wasn’t all that convincing really. Surely with this weekend off he would have been good to go. The PAPs have no doubt told him to rest up.

Was there any final word on Kane playing reserves somewhere this round? I thought it would be a pipe dream but I don't recall hearing anything about it being ruled out.
