Sri Lanka v Australia - 1st Test

I've been a critic of Hughes but I apologise for yesterday's comment. That was a nasty ball indeed that got him out, not much he could have done about that. I reckon 273 is competitive on that track. It won't be easy to bat on that's for sure.

The most important issue now is how well we bowl. We simply can't afford for our bowlers to cough up five runs per over on this track or this test will be over inside four days. We must bowl Sri Lanka out today to stay in the match.

Harsh. Harris can't bat. Nothing to do with weakness. If Hussey had challenged that decision he might have made a century yesterday.

Have I missed any?

Haurrie MUST play. He was starting to develop and we tossed him aside for guys that average over 70! Common sense selection?

Isnt Hauritz still having problems with his shoulder? Got to give Lyon a go, hasnt even bowled a ball yet and you want him to be replaced by Hauritz.

Sorry REB but padding up is one of my pet hates. At least make it look like your offering a shot, a bit of doubt and the ump mightnt have given it. Always looks worse for an ump when they dont offer a shot

Another great innings by Hussey.

Game will be over within 4 days with the pitch deteriorating like it is, they brang spin on in the 7th over which says alot.

To many batsman made starts though and didnt go on, just needed someone to stick around with Huss and we would have posted 300+

If he'd played a shot at that there would have been no doubt - struck well outside the line of off.

With a competent attack, that is a competitive total. So looking forward to seeing if we've got a competent attack! Not loving Lyon's chances after being taken for about 5 an over in both innings of the tour match. A bloke with 5 first class games against Sangas & co... I hope he proves me wrong though. The key will be the big three v the pacemen. If Lyon gets to come on at 2 or 3 fer, he'll have every chance to do well. Come in a 0 or 1 fer, and I worry for his mental state!

Good call Pottsy and come on Jimbo a batting mistake from a bunny batting on a minefield is surely forgivable. They are a harsh lot these Bomber fans! Just ask Brent Stanton or Matty Knights ha ha.

We made nearly 300. It's clearly no road, but you can score runs. If anything, it's a good cricket wicket. You've clearly been getting too used to pitches being too easy in recent years. Wasn't so long ago that losing 2 wickets before lunch was considered a pass for a batting side!

First two balls in Test cricket

1.2 Copeland to Dilshan, OUT, and he goes after the next one too, but ends up gifting Copeland his first Test wicket! Dilshan trying to take on the debutant and sticking to his way of going after pitched up deliveries outside off, this one was floated a touch wider, drew him out that much more and then moved away, the flailing drive from Dilshan flew in the air and Ricky Ponting at short cover snaps it up smoothly, that was screaming past him

TM Dilshan c Ponting b Copeland 4 (2b 1x4 0x6) SR: 200.00

1.1 Copeland to Dilshan, FOUR, and he is put away first ball, Dilshan doesn't care much about the condition of the pitch, he only sees the full length close to off stump, reaches out with the bat and not with the foot and clatters him through extra cover

I thought we batted really well to get that score. No way is that a good cricket wicket. A good cricket wicket gives everyone a chance. That's a day four track on day one. Recent years, right I've been following Tests since Lillee and Thompson opened the bowling.

Funny comment on Cricinfo......Is this SAFootys own Jimmy?

Jimmy: "Lyon has the opportunity here to become the best Australian spinner since Beer and Doherty and Hauritz and Krejza and McGain and... What is my word limit here?" Ha!

Interesting point though.....when was the last time an aus opening bowler bowled at speeds of 125km/ph...not for a while one would have thought?
