2012 Hogg Champions League PreviewLast season we had the unusual situation of Division I outranking Hogg Premier and many of the top coaches in the rankings coming from lower divisions. The idea of the Champions League is that if you can make the Grand Final of a Hogg Division you qualify. If you are in the Piglet or Bunny Bowl then you have to win to qualify. The rest of the places in this league were offered to those with the most points scored over the season.
The same rules will apply for next season’s Champions League so this league is an invitational league and not a promotional one (Grand Finalists of this league will earn an automatic invitation to the 2013 Champions League). Here is the Preview for the inaugural Champions League. Teams discussed are in seeded order.
1. Darksiders SCE (Hogg Premier winner 2011)
As a member of the number one league in SuperCoach last season, Darksiders SCE earn the number one seeding just ahead of the Honey Badgers who scored the same amount of points last season. The Dark Side also has documented consistency in the Hogg whereas the Badgers previous form is unknown to us. I’m just hoping that this league is a pretty tough one for the Dark Side so I won’t have to read more of his smug emails. Darksiders goes by the name of Spartan on Big Footy so you might see the occasional post by him there but this is one coach who plays his cards pretty close to his chest.
2. Honey Badgers (Runner up Hogg Division IV)
You know you are gun side when you can score as many points as the Dark Side over the course of the season even if the Badgers couldn’t get the job done in Divvy IV on Grand Final day. The problem for Banker in this comp is that there are about six Has Beens up here. The Badgers will be doing their business in Division I and Champions League and they’ll both be tough leagues I reckon. I would expect the Badgers to be involved at the latter end of this comp.
3. Has Been (Hogg Division IV winner 2011)
You can expect One Club Player’s Has Been to be a strong contender in this league and the matches against the Badgers and the Dark Side in particular should result in some high scoring clashes. In the very strong Division IV last year Has Been only dropped two matches all year and even got some local publicity for being one of the top ranked SuperCoaches in the state. It’s game on Darksiders.
4. Buddy Franklin (Overall points qualifier)
Masha’s impressive Buddy Franklin combination failed to lay a glove on their opponents during the Division VI finals but for most of the season last year they were an absolute monster that laid waste to all before them. Buddy will find things much tougher in this league and that easy games in 2012 will be few and far between. This mob will probably dominate all year and then go out in straight sets.
5. Longwood Lions (Overall points qualifier)
Alaska’s Lions have been steadily building an impressive Hogg record which has culminated in a Champions League berth and a spot in Division I this season. If Alaska can keep the freeze on their opponents again this year there will be little left for the Lions to achieve bar a spot in the Premier League which does not seem beyond him. The Lions should roar into the finals.
6. MILLER MOSQUITOES (Overall points qualifier)
The Mozzies’ coach is a young bloke from AFL Online who goes by the name hawks rule so this tells us that even deluded individuals can become good to outstanding SuperCoaches. The Mozzies, like Buddy Franklin barely dropped a game all year in Division I last season but it was out the door come finals time. There was nothing in the Mozzie’s 2010 results that hinted at what he ended up doing in 2011 so he’s pretty much at the crossroads here and very difficult to predict how he might go in this comp.
7. Underdogs (Piglet Shield winner 2011)
Gibbo has won back to back Piglets as well as making a statement in Division I last season, in fact doing so well that she got promoted to Hogg Premier League. Gibbo is the number one ranked female competitor in the Hogg and she’s a tough nut to crack because she hasn’t got any ha ha. However, The Underdogs are not to be underestimated and Gibbo is not a walk up four points in any Hogg League. A genuine chance.
8. Cork in the Ocean (Overall points qualifier)
Interceptor’s Cork in the Ocean has never had a bad Hogg season and deserves his place in the Champions League. While he has yet to perform consistently in finals it is only a matter of time before he ends up in the Premier League although he might have to wait a while a la Captain Who. In this comp I’d expect Corky to make the eight but it’s all bets are off come finals time.
9. Greedy Guns (Hogg Division VI winner 2011)
BigShow82 snuck up on everyone in Division VI last season getting past the highly ranked Buddy Franklin and The Wizard Sleeves to win a Hogg Premiership at his first attempt. Despite this impressive effort it is hard to imagine Greedy replicating the feat in this company. While you can never underestimate a Hogg Premiership winner it is more likely that Show’s best chance for glory this season will be in Division III.
10. Les’s Men (Hogg Division III winner 2011)
Les’s Men coach who we’ve called ‘Asterix’ in the past is a mate of CoverKing who wishes to retain his anominity. Maybe he should stop being so cheeky by pulling shit like winning Hogg Premierships from eighth spot on the ladder. Les didn’t really rack up much early action last year and came home like a rocket but I don’t think that is much of an option in this field which has just too much quality for Les to repeat the dose.
11. The Wizard Sleeves (Hogg Division VI runner up)
The Sleeves had to change their team name as they offended the powers that be during the season but his newly chosen moniker proved to be prophetic. LMA had nothing up his sleeve in the Division VI finals last year but still managed to pull off some finals magic to make the Grand Final and qualify for the Champions League. Hmm…sounds like my approach! Sorry LMA but no finals for you in this one.
12. halemhawks (Hogg Division I winner 2011)
The halemhawks coached by wycbloods went under the poster’s name last year and made every post a winner by winning the toughest recorded Hogg League in history. So despite being ranked 12th in the seedings I expect bloods to make the eight because not only does he score points but he wins matches as well and that is important in these head to head leagues.
13. Marion ManBearPigs (Hogg Division II winner 2011)
This team has won every Hogg Premiership they have ever entered. The milky bar kid is the only coach to have won more than one flag and achieved this feat. The milky bar kid has won every gun fight but this year in Division I and in the Champions League he is going to face some real badasses out there that eat white chocolate for breakfast. The party’s over dude.
14. The Cat Empire (Runner up Hogg Premier 2011)
Despite scoring bugger all points my Cat Empire (aka REBCats or bridesmaids) has an excellent head to head record particularly in finals (except for Grand Finals mutter mutter). However I can’t see myself making the eight in this league and I reckon if I win five matches I’ve done pretty well. A big improvement is needed to be competitive in this comp.
15. Hips Don’t Lie (Runner up Hogg Division III 2011)
Hips aka ‘Obelix’ is another of CoverKing’s mates that wishes to remain unknown. So far Hips has been joined at the Hips with Les’s Men. Both joined the same time, both in the same league, both won their way through to the Granny and now both are in the same leagues again. They just can’t be split folks and watch out if they both make the eight. I’m tipping they won’t though and be side by side in the bottom ten here.
16. Dutchy’s Dodos (Runner up Hogg Division I 2011)
Like The Wizard Sleeves and The Cat Empire, Dutchy’s Dodos are a team that scored low but won big during the finals only to fall short of a Hogg Premiership. This means that even these lower scoring teams cannot be underestimated as they have good head to head records. Like the Sleevers, the Dodos are prone to a slow start which would be fatal here if that happens again.
17. Deckens Cider (Runner up Hogg Division II 2011)
Who the hell is this mob many people might ask? The coach of Deckens Cider is lovetotalkfooty but he doesn’t bloody say much so we don’t know much about him except that despite pissing off overseas he claimed his Champions League spot much to the disappointment of next cab off the rank cossi. I reckon that in this league the Cider will go flat.
18. Pump up ze jams (Bunny Bowl winner 2011)
VC mate what have you done? VC’s Pump up ze jams cleaned up the seemingly unbeatable Hairy Chequebook in the bunny last year and despite not even being the top scorer in the bunny, he’s now in the Champions League. It’s going to be a long winter for the ze jams this winter and he now finds himself in one after his unlikely success in the Bunny Bowl final last year. He’s my pick for the spoon if I don’t’ get it.
Top Eight Predictions1. Has Been
2. Buddy Franklin
3. Honey Badgers
4. Darksiders SCE
5. halemhawks
6. Underdogs
7. Longwood Lions
8. Cork in the Ocean
