Players who played in 1985 also played in 1997

Postby spell_check » Tue Aug 23, 2011 10:41 pm

When compiling the players goalkicking list for 1985, I noticed the amount of players who were still there in 1997:

Greg Anderson
George Fiacchi
Grantley Fielke
Tim Ginever
Andrew Jarman
Scott Lee
Chris McDermott
Garry McIntosh
Andrew Payze
Brenton Phillips
John Platten
Andrew Rogers
Stephen Schwerdt
Darren Smith
David Stoeckel
Mark Tylor
James West
Rohan Smith

Plus, John Platten was at Hawthorn and would return to SA the following year. Darren Jarman was also at the Crows, too.

Edit: So did Rohan Smith.

PS: Roger Delaney played in night series matches in 1985.

I don't want to take this thread too far off topic, but I wonder how many players playing in the 70's, were still playing in the 90's ie. 1990 and beyond.

Bruce Lindsay and Michael Aish are 2 who I think qualify. Also Greg Phillips.

I'd like to do that to every decade.

Lindsay, Aish, Phillips, David Marshall, Grantley Fielke, Ian Hanna, Ralph Sewer, Ron Fuller, Darryl Hewitt, Greg Boyd, Bruce Abernethy, Mark Williams, Stephen Williams, Neil Craig, Lee Robson, Keith Thomas, Kym Hodgeman, David Tiller, John Riley, Rene van Dommele, John Seebohm, Michael Redden, Mark Prior, Frank Spiel, Randall Bennett, Mark Naley, Steve Geyer, Leon Grosser.

They all did, amazing list considering the following for the 90s players to now:

Ben Nelson
Tim Weatherald
Rhett Biglands
Chad Cornes
Adam Switala
Brett Burton
Matthew Bode
Justin Cicolella
Chris Chubb
Daniel Schell
Josh Carr
Stephen Doyle
James Gallagher
Stuart Bown
Nathan Eagleton

Although I suppose you've also got players like Pavlich, Ottens, McLeod, Edwards, Goodwin etc. who were/are at AFL clubs last year and this year.

Zip Zap Ralph Sewer played in the 60's, 70's 80's and 90's.

Not sure if anyone else has achieved that.

Did Ralph debut in 1969 and retire in 1990?

Sewer returned to Woodville after playing at Glenelg I tend to recall. That must be right as he didn't play in any of the Glenelg grand finals between 85 and 88. I'm guessing he only played 2 or 3 seasons at Glenelg, and returned to Woodville around 83 or 84?

If Super Carey started his career 2 years later he would've made it. 71-88 is a fair effort.

So presumably he played in losing grand finals in 81 and 82. I'm thinking in hindsight he wishes he stayed for 85 and 86 to play in a flag.

He was suspended in 1981, but played in 1982.

That still would have been three decades, he would have had to both started and finished two years earlier to get the four decades like Sewer. I doubt that anyone would get close to Sewer.

John McInnes from Norwood is an interesting case. He played in 1957 and in the 1970s but did he play league in the 1960s?

And I can only think of a couple of players who played in the 1940s and 1960s, Don Gilbourne and Dave Boyd. I am sure that there are others but none that readily come to mind.

Without checking the records, I'm thinking Lindsay Head played from mid 50's to early 70's?

Russell Ebert late 60's to mid 80's.

I think his first game "back" was Phil Carman's first game for Norwood, which would be 1970.

First game was v. North Adelaide in the 1956 1st Semi Final.
Second game was v. Port Adelaide, round 1 1970.

After the 1956 1st Semi, he played no organised football at all until attempting a short lived comeback in 1967. He didn't play in 1968, then won the Reserves Magarey Medal in 1969.
