Tiger Airlines Grounded until next Saturday

Postby Sojourner » Sat Jul 02, 2011 8:06 am

No doubt this is going to cause many problems for people that were unfortunate enough to have gone with Tiger to organise trips this week - this is the first time that this has ever actually happened in Australia, so I do wonder what they have actually found, the allegation is that they may have been operating under the minimum safety standards.

I feel for the people that will be affected by this, I don't feel any sorrow for the airline though, this is the same airline which unlike any other airline that operates in Australia refuses to allow disabled people that need assistance to actually buy tickets and travel on their aircraft, Why the government allows discrimination like this to occur in this day and age in Australia is anyone's guess. Clearly it must save them money to do so, much like looking for savings on their maintenance bills perhaps?

Jetstar and Virgin have added extra flights to deal with the influx of passengers stranded because of the TIger suspension.

Also, Qantas engineers have responded to the grounding by cancelling strike action

my missus has a return flight to Melb booked with them in 3 weeks ... not sure whether to book alternate flights now or wait until (if) the other airlines provide some alternative (hopefully) discounted flights.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Virgin are offering flights for Tiger customers for either $100 for 'short haul' flights or $200 for 'long haul' flights which appears to be similar to their 'flexi' fare rules (ie checked luggage included).

More info, including info on how to take up these fares, is available at http://www.virginaustralia.com/serviced ... /index.htm

Missus booked four tickets to Melbourne for the 22nd of July some weeks ago. We basically had lost all hope of flying there and since had made plans to drive.

She rang Qantas today and have got flights for 116 after pleading our case/plight.

I think Tiger are just about shot in Australia. But for competitions sake I hope I'm wrong.

If Tiger fall over, hopefully an airline like AirAsia will come in and fill in that 4th airline spot. Otherwise I wouldn't be surprised if Qantas wrapped up Jetstar and we end up back in the bad old days of a duopoly (only with Virgin replacing Ansett).

have been cleared to fly again ... who'd use them now?

By the way, they have refunded all flights booked by the misses, so well done for that.

They've closed their Adelaide 'base' and 'suspended' their Avalon base.

They're cutting back majorly on services (which they were already doing before the suspension). TBH, I can't see them lasting the year with their reputation in absolute tatters, but hopefully they can improve on their reliability and safety by only focusing on a few services and slowly rebuild their reputation.

I hope Tiger remain in business to keep Jetstar on their toes.

Think a bullet train up the East Coast of Australia is the best next step for us irrespective of what companies like Tiger end up doing!
