Coincidence the biggest crowds coincides with the only time the "big four" were in the finals this century? I think not....

2000 three of the big for in....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I would have though in order the big 4 is Port, Norwood, North and Sturt although a case could now be made for Central and Eagles to replace North and Sturt, at least for this decade.

How North with the third most flags, third most Grand Finals played, second least wooden spoons, second most Magarey Medals and the last SANFL team to be Champions of Australia isn't rated as one of the Big 4 throughout the history of the SANFL has always left me perplexed,

Doug Thomas at least always spoke of the Big 5 and was quoted as saying that when West won the flag in 1983 it was the first team outside of the Big 5 to win a flag since South in 1964.

More to do with modern day succes, perhaps since mid-70's to today? People in the age group like me of 35-40 dotn recall alot of North Adelaide success.

I recall 1989 pretty well, could that be termed succesful? ;)

I always assumed the Big 4 referred to the 4 clubs that had the most fickle supporters and have the biggest difference in crowds between when they're winning and when theyre losing.
(which is understandable with 3 of the 4 clubs considering their fans have enjoyed periods of success such as Norwood in the prehistoric era, Port before 2k and Sturt in the 60s)

In all seriousness, I just did a newstext search on the terms "big 4" and SANFL.

Got the following hit:

SA's Big 4 back in business Power sides set to draw the crowds again
The News, 18-03-1992, Ed: 3 - 24 Hours/Final, Pg: 044, 747 words ,
The glory days of the seventies are set to return - the big four is back in town. Port, Glenelg, Norwood and Sturt are ready to crawl out of their coccoons after a year in hibernation. The four power sides of yesteryear finished a lonely fifth, sixth...

Being too tight-@rsed to download the full article, I would infer from the above snippet that the term "big 4" refers to the four clubs which habitually finished on the upper rungs of the ladder during the seventies.

So even historic references, in 1992, dont mention North? Interesting. Seems as though no-one cared about them then either.

since the mid 70s until today North Adelaide, Glenelg and Sturt have all won two flags. If you remember 1989 you would also therefore remember 1987 and 1991.

The big 4 has always been about crowd numbers IMO.

Is the apparent lack of interest in North's record perhaps due to them not having a period of domination like some others? Their success has been spread quite consistently throughout their history.

How the bays get in there is simply baffling though.

Yet for much of their history Glenelg were poor crowd pullers. It was only when Kerley came along that their crowds improved.

The Big 4, regardless of the reason for the expression, is a waste of time.

My club get's included in it and do I take any consolation from it? **** No!!

Does being a member of the so-called "Big 4" provide any comfort for the lack of real achievement of my club? Of course not.

Every year there is a "Big 1*" and that is it, full stop, the end, nothing else matters.

The big 4 was a cliche used in the mid to late 1970s [PA/NW/ST/GL]
I reckon it was Ashley Porter who mentioned the big 4 ???
Had the hype transgressed a few years to the early 70s then NA would have been included
To continue that big 4 talk and not include NA in the 80s + 90s is proposterous
