It defies market logic to do so.

The competitive edge lies in pricing. Only in industries that are monopolised will the cost be passed on.

There are no costs yet.

If companies are cheating, notify the Government body and the companies will be fined.

st, no-one has said that costs aren't going to be passed on, so why do you say that?

Have you worked out how much compensation you will get under the tax cuts?

Don't worry ST I'm still here - I've been busy compiling a list of questions to ask Tony Abbott the next time I see him. Here's what I have so far:

Hey Tony if carbon dioxide is weightless why are you proposing to spend taxpayer dollars to pay businesses by the tonne to reduce their emissions?

Hey Tony if carbon dioxide is weightless why do scientists measure it in tonnes?

Hey Tony if carbon dioxide is weightless why are you so worried about a carbon price of $23.00 per tonne?

Hey Tony which is heavier a tonne of carbon dioxide or a tonne of lead?

Hey Tony if carbon dioxide is weightless can I put 50kg in a container and drop it on your foot?

Happy to hear of any other suggestions that posters might have...

straight talker wrote:Now do you believe that Miss Gillard and Mr swan are liars and lied to the Australian people before the election in telling us there would be no carbon tax??
I have no doubt that Ms. Gillard broke a promise that she made before the last election.

I don't believe that makes her a liar - I reckon she made that promise sincerely at the time and only went back on it under the post-election political reality of the "coalition" with the Greens.

straight talker wrote:[carbon dioxide] has a molecule weight of 44.01
Correct ST.

The molecular weight is somewhat abstract though, as I understand it is a dimensionless number that represents the weight of the molecule compared to one twelfth of a carbon-12 atom. :?

Density is probably a better measure - for carbon dioxide it is about 1.8 kilograms per cubic metre, although the exact value depends on the temperature and pressure.

Carbon dioxide is heavier than air, which has a density of around 1.2 kilograms per cubic metre.

Hopefully plenty of compensation R&B!

One question though, how is it that the Pental Soap Factory in Victoria has to increase their prices - which we are to be compensated for, yet overseas based Soap companies in countries like China where there is no Carbon Tax dont have to increase their price at all? What happens to the employees at Pental when their company cant compete with the now much cheaper imported products on the shelves? How many people are really going to "pay the extra" for products that contain a Carbon Tax component when they can save their "compensation" and simply buy the cheaper imported product? Think its a fair bet that firms like Cunninghams and so on are going to do pretty well out of Julia's Carbon tax with imported products whilst Aussie firms tank?

Everyone knows the costs will be passed on, even the government, why do you think we are being compensated? MY point was on the incentives for companies to change what they have been doing.
