200+ people have been arrested so far with plenty more to come, will be interesting to see how they are actually dealt with, I suspect with little more than a smack on the wrist and sent out of the courtroom with a bag of lollies with the excuse that the courts are to busy and there is not enough room in the prisons to place people.
Several years ago a shop I worked in had its front window smashed by a drunken teenage idiot, the chap that lived across the road followed the kid home and led the police to him where he was charged and sent to the youth court and got off with a warning. No mention however was ever made that this clown should have to take responsibility for what he had done and work off the cost of the window to the insurance company. I feel that is where the court system goes wrong and lets people down. People caught damaging property should be dealt with as the law allows but should also be required to take responsibility for what they have done and actually pay for the damages and make good what was done. I feel the gutless way these damages are being carried out is likely due in part to people who ultimately are not prepared to take responsibility for what they have done and I feel that the legal system actually encourages that to be the case. If people want to see this type of thing not happening again, its time the legal system got a major overhaul and people were dealt with in a way that was actually fair to all parties concerned.
