seen afew games in hills just quiety also chatting to afew guys i know in hills league, ok most come from bottom team in that comp. but all tell me hills league does not have the total quality of players that a top southern league team does. as did try to say befor all teams have very good players but its the last 5 to 10 players that show how strong your club is.

Southern was dominating inter association against Hills ,r.m.f.l and Great Southern in all grades and i think that is why lovelock shield ceased. Also know that Morphett Vale have regularly beaten top div 2 and lower div 1 S.A.A.F.L teams in trial games but trials dont always mean a lot....... but Southern would have to be the second strongest league even though the bottom few teams ( Aldinga, Hackham) would struggle in most leagues ........ Kangies finshed 10th in Southern and won Hills div 2 the following year with virtuallly the same team

wait kangarilla picked up a few more players including a medalist. also they won a div 2 premiership which is no were near the same as a hills div 1 or central. s russel played for ironbank in div 1 and did alright. he has constantly been in best in southern. i believe there is not much in between southern and hills central. there are a few players from southern that have done not to well in hills. m short from morphetvalle wasn't near as good in hills as southern. craig smith had a short stint in hills and did nothing and eagleton from happy valley played 1 game in hills central 2yrs ago and said quote"hills football is alot more difficult than he thought". he got 1 handball. he than played the rest of the season for happy valley and wa always scoring 2 or 3 goals a game. i believe let hills face southern in june next year and we will than see who is the better legaue!

each comp would perform in there own conditions. southern footy is hard to gauge due to beltings more often than not, but the top 5/6 sides eg, morphies, reynella, happy valley, cove, port noarlunga and brighton on there day can be very competitive with each other, and top sides in most other comps.
no experience against amateur footy, but can imagine the A1s would be too good, professional compared to the average local footballers.
southern second, top teams in each comp would be close just not as deep as them

I tend to agree with you as Southern has always dominated the Lovelock shield which I would think gives Southern an edge on the Hills comp. Also a few Hills teams tend to be taking on Ex Southern players as coaches i.e D.Exelby C.Lallard and M.Duncan.

North Eastern has:

North Clare - Ricky O'loughlin playing this year Eddie Hocking is coach
South Clare - Matt Manfield from AFL/Eagles/Bays also Brad Nordhauseen from west adelaide has kicked a couple century of goals in the past few seasons and had good seasons in Darwin, many other good players.
RSMU (Riverton/Saddleworth/Marrable) - Brian Leys is playing coach, it was Donald Dickie previously have won 3 flags since going to North Eastern.
Eudunda - Steven Carter and Brayden Lyle playing.
BSR (Brinkworth/Spalding/Redhill) - NO ex SANFL players but very strong in the past with the Stringer brothers, Damien Kitschke (Sturt/St Kilda) and Dennis Weckert (Bays/West) and Jason McKenzie from the Dogs played their in the past.
Min-Man (Mintaro-Manorra) - Strong club no stand out names.
Blyth/Snowtown - No big names but a top team.
BBH (Burra/Booborawie/Hallett) - A struggler of a club but has produced Daniel Schell.

Very strong league.

Don't know that they are a "very" strong leave. RSMU and Eudunda both joined the league because they were perennial cellar dwellers in the BL&G (Altohugh Riverton had a couple OK seasons prior to their departure)

[quote="GWW"]If there was a Carnival and players from all associations made themselves available, i'd predict that the finishing order could be something like:

A1 Amateur
Southern
Western Border
Hills
Spencer Gulf
Barossa Valley
Kowree Naracoorte
Whyalla
Great Southern
Riverland
Mid South East
River Murray
Port Lincoln (mainly because of absence of Adelaide based/ex SANFL players due to distance)
Yorke Peninsula
Great Flinders
Mallee
Far West

Going by GWW's list (plus a few extra's) plus my experience my ratings would be:

Western Border
Southern
Kowree/Naracoorte
Hills (City)
GSFL
BLG&G
Riverland
Northern Areas
River Murray
Yorke Pen.
Mid South East

The rest equal...
Whyalla
Pt Lincoln
Adelaide Plains
Great Flinders
North Eastern
Far West
Mallee
SGL

MAGPIE IN THE 80's

Postby THE BARKING SPIDERS » Fri Mar 23, 2007 7:43 pm

i would be very interested to know who you are magpie, did you coach? i grew up in millicent, played all my jnr career there, my old man was A grade team manager late 80s most of 90s, family still got strong footy connections in the area.
i still believe western border is strong but mid se closeing the gap every year as evidence by how good tantanoola were last year. last weeks form suggests theyll be hard to beat again for this years flag as they beat west gambier by 8 goals on wkend.
with tant winning the flag last year that made it all 9 clubs over the last 12 yrs had won the major one, now thats a healthy comp. tarpeena have folded.
the top 4 sides of southern would push or beat the div 1 sides, unfortunately after that the other sides cant compete which makes for a very unhealthy comp.
watched 4th play 5th last yr in minor round game in great sthrn for cupla qtrs, the standard wasnt that good, i found myself headin back to watch sfl at aldinga, found that a betta standard as a spectator.
footy in sthrn area pretty boring with the domination of m/vale for last 3yrs & willunga for last 10.
all other leagues dont know to much about.
playing u/18 against those victorian sides early 90s, now that was tough hard football, what do you reckon magpie?

what do you base your worst list of leagues by??
you're obviously very clever because i have been involved at a great southern club and they have won the association matches against river murray league every year for the past 3 or 4.
on these facts i would say great southern is at least better than river murray!
im interested in your reasoning behind this decision!

I think someone needs to get out more, especially to the Eyre Peninsula (for the worst) and look again at the South East - especially Mount Gambier!

I'd have to agree there Phil, Great Southern and Mid SE both have some very strong clubs. Theres a hell of a lot worse leagues in the state than those 2.

I dont know where you got your reults from but Shane Russell certainly did not get in the best players except when they played a lowly ranked team. His efforts in the finals apart from the injury was ordinary.
