What is happening at Port?

Postby Sojourner » Sat Aug 06, 2011 11:51 pm

Collingwood 23. 21 138
def
Port 3.3 21

Fair to say that Port are at one of their lowest points since having joined the competition, dual records tonight, either of them good, - lowest score ever for the club and largest losing margin ever for the club.

At various times throughout tonight's game it poured with rain, yet Collingwood maintained clean first use of the footy despite the conditions. Collingwood kicked nearly as many points as goals and it would not have taken many more to be straight for them to have beaten Geelongs margin over the Gold Coast.

Hopefully with some decent revenue coming into the club, Port can make the Assistant Coaching positions full time and get a full compliment of staff as well as pay the full 100% of the Salary Cap, think its causing some issues at the moment and at least those issues can be easily solved

No doubt Primus is a good coach, yet I am not convinced that his strengths like in player development which is where Port will likely need to focus their energies with GWS having the best half of the draft this time around. Port don't have much to trade with except for like for like players, so to go forward, much is going to depend on how they can develop their list.

Perhaps one suggestion is for an external review to be undertaken by a suitable group of experienced people and a report to be made to the club, I would suggest that a review would work better if taken during the season as opposed to the end of the season so that Primus and the assistant staffs match day coaching can be reviewed appropriately also. Decisions clearly need to be made on who to reappoint and who to cut from the club, simply doing nothing is going to see the club continue to fail at this level.

Maybe a good SANFL coach...AFL??? No idea.

Port wont got anywhere in 3 to 4 years.

Something seriously needs to be done about them. It's hurting SANFL football to much.

They wanted to be the best side in the AFL so they need to suck it up and deal with it.

They wanted to go into the AFL.....live by the sword , die by the sword.!!!!

Port were conned by some good performances in the last few games of last year. For mine caretaker coaches are just meant to be tempory. Crows will make the same mistake with Bickley, they will win a couple more this year and then sign him up.

I have no doubt at all that Primus can't coach. No debate in my mind. Name one Port player who has improved since he was at the helm? Absolutely mind boggling selections all season. Take tonight for example, drops Rodan because he isn't a running player  Then put Davenport in the team and puts him up forward! Our game plan is to move the ball slowly, because as Primus said "the players aren't good enough to make the correct decision moving the ball quickly" Will be a long three years of Primus "coaching"

1. How do we even know he'd be good at SANFL level? (Im sure he like his colleagues he may well be, but the fact remains we could never know)

2. Doesnt look likely, but they are not alone.

3. Not sure how much it's hurting the SANFL .. The image of footy in SA no doubt

4. All AFL clubs that are in the comp want to be there

Ups and downs are one thing, but a lot of what is happening has nothing to do with our position on the ladder, things like no even attempting to put your best 22 out on the park, or no desire to even get the ball let alone do something good with it have nothing to do with an inexperienced team. Usually you put a few youngsters in a team and they have a decent crack. That's not happening.

I have to say that surprises me, to give an unproven Coach a three year contract is an interesting move. Pretty sure Demetriou wont be giving permission for him to be sacked and paid out with AFL funds. If he seriously cant coach at the level of Clarkson or Malthouse then Port are in for a pretty rough time one might think!

For what Result? GWS get the first round picks, anyone that is a game changer is going to be gone long before Port get there with their one pick!

A post I put in the tanking topic mate:

JK wrote:IMHO, Ports plan all along for this season has been to get games into the kids sometimes at the expenses of some victories, load up on draft picks, particularly by the time the 2012 superdraft MkII rolls around.

Having achieved their other key goal of financial security, their plan would be all about hitting the Adelaide Oval era with a decent enough product to put on display .. And again IMHO, it's sensible thinking and planning by the club.

I reckon Primus took on the role of fall guy right from the get go, and this was the directive of the club so effectively I reckon he was always likely to "take one for the team" .. He didn't drop Cornes x2, Surjan etc last season as caretaker, only once he got the job.

Scott and another were apparently super impressive in the interview process and considered front-runners among several of the Power heavyweights, but the job fell to Primus.

Just my thoughts, probably on my own with that line of thinking but I definitely believe it to be the case.

It's not meant as a defence for Primus either, I have no idea whether he can coach or not.

i'd just like to point out that the score in the opening post is incorrect.

23.21 159

138 was the winning margin.

You are right, we do need to play the youngsters, but the problem is there system the club us using is to play them no matter what without making them accountable for their performance. I can deal with players making mistakes, but its the complete lack of effort that gets to me.

TOTALLY agree mate, that's the most concerning issue .. With a young group you expect that every now and then, but it's happening too regularly.
