T20 being played in the 30's?

Postby Booney » Wed Aug 03, 2011 10:21 am

My Mum and her cousins are currently investigating their family tree.

My Mums uncle Ted ( Ted Kilworth ) was quite a promising cricketer until he lost his right eye as an early teen and they have discovered this little article from The Advertiser, about him. The Kilworth's were a very well known name around Bowden and Brompton. This article might explain why I didn't feel the need to run between the wickets too often  :

This may have been one of the first T20 matches.... ;)

The Advertiser Monday 5th December 1938 :

Talking of cricket, here is a remarkable coincidence. Recently a cricket match was played at Galway Estate between teams representing Hindmarsh Corporation and Quarries Ltd. A time limit of an hour and a half for batting was agreed upon. Hindmarsh won the toss, and at the time had lost eight wickets for 147 runs. Of this total two batsmen, each of whom had lost his right eye, made 106 - Kilworth 84 not out, including 5 sixes, seven fours; Curnow,22 not out. Kilworth's knock, they say, was typical of Jack Lyons in his palmy days. The performances of these men, who could see nothing of the field at the back of point, was remarkable.Incidentally Quarries Ltd, responded with 122 for the loss of six wickets.
