Yeah I don't think he was publicly discussed but who knows perhaps was considered by the club but overlooked. He wouldn't have done any worse than some of the players we had in the early years of our AFL squad though.

Anyone remember much about Chris Lindsay's career with West Torrens? I recall he played some impressive footy but I'm not sure if he sustained it. Played at Essendon too from memory?

I think Collette (ring my bell fame) appeared at the Bay Disco in the late 80s, so she has to be considered....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Were you a part of the selection panel that picked the original squad?

Geez, wasn't like there was intense media coverage about that squad or nothing.

But no, I'm not Jack, Choco or Stewie.

Given his intimate knowledge of the SANFL, Cahill would've already had a fair idea who he wanted from local ranks. B&F winner for the wooden-spooners obviously didn't impress enough. Perhaps only a Nathan Buckley '92 breakout season would've warranted serious attention.

Might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Stewart convinced them to take Conway.

From the SANFL the Power went for young guns, several of whom were paid off to not enter the draft, and proven SANFL players.

IIRC, one surprising omission from the inaugural squad was Nathan Bassett.

Lemme check with the selection panel...

Sure there would have been many players considered for the squad that the media never found about.
After all, they were trying to tell us that Adam Saliba might be considered just because he decided to pull on the boots for Kilburn halfway through the 1996 A1 amatuer season at about 30kg above his ideal playing weight.

Woodville had a few: Ray Boyanich - he could really play but was caught resting on the goalpost (literally) at the Pecker hill end and was dragged by Jack McInnes and never played again. Others: Stephen Parsons -flashy white boots from Richmond, we flew him over weekly from Melbourne to play as we also did with Robert (?) brother of Arnold Briedis. Not always in the breeding.

He played 12 VFL games with Collingwood in the mid-late 70s.

Ray Boyanich had been a regular for three seasons at Richmond and came to Woodville off the back of a grand final appearance for them. He got injured in a trial at Alberton and never showed his best for Woodville. He then returned to Richmond for a season before heading back to WA where he played for West Perth.

Stephen Parsons was actually a central figure in the infamous Windy Hill brawl whilst playing for Richmond. He too could really play but was inconsistent - he actually had the yellow boots with the green Puma stripe, which were fashionable at the time....

Ray Boyanich started his VFL career with Hawthorn but did play a league game before transferring to Richmond.

There are some fairly "big names" in that photo :)

I didn't realised Leon Twelftree was originally from Woodville? Is that his brother in the photo as well?

Buff Tyrell was so easy to pick out :)

How many clubs has Michael Flynn been associated with as a player/coach/admin staff?

Also interesting to see another Carlaw, any relation to the Roger?

Gus Carlaw came down from Broken Hill. He played mostly Seconds; about 20-odd League games.

Bruce Twelftree was a centre half back type who was Leon's older brother; they came from Minlaton on the Yorke Peninsula from memory. Leon was fantastic for us for a couple of years but lost form and played Seconds before heading to Glenelg.

Ken Deards was a dud we acquired from West Adelaide in a swap for Peter Meuret(!). He was actually a premiership player in WA before crossing to SA.

Ken Crane was a handy player who came from Richmond reserves and was stranded on 99 games by Rod Olsson.

You can actually cobble up a pretty decent team from that lot, but the last quarter of the side falls away.

F: Roberts, Mulvihill, Harvey
HF: Cummins, Parker, L.Twelftree
C: Maylin, Parsons, Hutton
HB: Crane, Tyrrell, Stemper
B: Heaven, Scheer, Brenton
1R: MacVicar, Girardi, Ruth
2R: Brenton, Roberts, Harvey
Res: Deards, B.Twelftree

If you selected a Woodville side from 1964-1990, it would be a very imposing team. Around late 60s-early 70s, Woodville had some of the best young talent in Australia, but were not able to hold onto their players as well as Port Adelaide, Sturt, Norwood and Glenelg.

Here's a squad of around 40 players to demonstrate the talent that was at Woodville.

Rodney Allen, Barrie Barbary, Bob Beecroft, Malcolm Blight, Greg Brehaut, David Christie, Brian Close, John Cummins, Michael Doszna, Ron Fuller, John Girardi, Barry Goodingham, Fred Hansch, Kevin Harris, Lindsay Heaven, Daryl Hewitt, Glynn Hewitt, Eddie Holland, Ray Huppatz, Allen Jakovich, John Klug, Colin MacVicar, Craig McKellar, Phil Maylin, Kevin McSporran, Peter Meuret, Robert Muir, Brian Mulvihill, Stephen Nichols, Peter Obst, Darrell Panizza, Max Parker, Trevor Pierson, Laurie Richards, John Roberts, Andrew Rogers, Peter Schwarz, Ralph Sewer, Bob Simunsen, Frank Stemper, Noel Teasdale, Barry Tyrell, Tom West.

You could make a pretty good team from that list :)

Yes. Had a disagreement with John McInnes and played out a year in the Reserves in 1978 before heading to Flinders Park.
