What sort of dog do you have/would you recommend?

Rottys are the best dogs. I like big dogs, not the small rat sort of things that yap.

Hate cats. What a useless animal they are. Stuff like the Giant Panda and Bengal Tiger are close to extinction and the domestic cat are breeding like crazy. Where is the justice in that?

I've got a Cocker Spaniel cross Boxer.
I wouldn't recommend her to anyone as a breed as she's pretty damn stupid but there's not a bad bone in her body.
Also its a good cross as she's got the short Boxer hair and is the size of a Cocker, her mum was a Boxer so the dad must have been a pretty athletic Cocker!
As I type this she's out the back barking at nothing which drives Mrs Wedgie insane, mind you I don't think Mrs Wedgie has ever liked her as she's black and white!

What dog do you have and would you recommend it?

PS Here's 2 pictures of "Jemma" as she looked as a puppy and as she looks now, my daughter named her after the lip gloss Big Brother contestent a few years back.

My girl was right as rain on Monday, seemed a bit under the weather on Wednesday and she was drinking more water than normal so took her to the Vet on Thursday with what I thought was as a tummy upset.
After $800 of tests found out she had several secondary cancers in the liver, kidney, etc and not even knowing where the primary cancer was completely inoperable.
She's 10, but was still acting like a puppy till Monday, used to wait at the door for me as I was the one that fed, bathed and walked her. She'd sing for me when I got home and take a good 20 minutes to settle down.

Vet gave us pain killers yesterday which we have to force down her throat as she isn't eating a thing (she's normally a pig).
Best case scenario, she gets her appetite and normal drinking pattern back and she lasts a few good months on painkillers.
Worst case scenario, she continues to not eat anything and to be fair to her to put her down next week.

She hasn't eaten a thing still.
If anything she's a bit worse, I can't even get chicken into her which she'd normally leap at.
I'm a shattered man.
I'm never getting a dog again.

Real good week after my daughter fractured her ankle at netball on Tuesday and it was her birthday on the day we took Jemma to the vet and got the news.

Jemmas laying next to me on her couch where she always does when I'm on the PC atm. Keep glancing across at her wondering what it will be like without her there.
She's trying to sleep but flinches every now and then in pain, it'd be cruel if I let this go on too much longer.

Terrible news Wedgie.

Only advice I can pass on is never say you wont get another dog. My first dog was bought by my parents as a 4th birthday present, and I lost him on christmas eve 2000 to leukemia. Took me 5 years before I gathered the courage to get another one.

I have since moved out and bought another dog. He is only 6 months now so he has a long time left hopefully. Yes i cant say i have had to put one to sleep yet and cant imagine what that would be like.

If you feel the way you do about losing Jemma, IMO another dog deserves that love and affection from your family, rather than some w*nker that will mistreat it, and unfortunately there is a growing number of people like this.

The best treatment is to get another dog ASAP once you've made the decision to let her go.

When my uncles dog jackson died, he found the week and a half where he found himself not being able to go for walks and the sound of barking when he came home (all the day to day stuff) etc...was too much to handle. He bought Rex a week later and while he still remembers Jackson fondly, he's not moping about losing a friend because he's found another.

That's terribly sad to hear Wedgie, hope she mends as best possible for you but unfortunately it sounds as though there's going to come a sad time sooner rather than later.

We all cope with these things in different ways, and whilst Im sure it wouldn't provide much comfort at the minute, she won't be your last Dog and Im sure you'll have another memorable addition to the family once you all feel comfortable bringing in a new pup.

Yes, I agree with valleys, FC and JK.

I've been through the same (like so many of us) and got a new dog after a few months on two occasions now.

It's really hard coming to terms with losing your friend, but I've found it's easier after you get another dog. It also gives you more opportunities to fondly remember the one you've lost, rather than just remembering the sad time at the end.

Really sad to hear that Wedgie, my thoughts are with you and you family.

End of last year I had to put down my 16 year old Border Collie when his back legs went. Hardest thing I have done as he was such a great dog (and friend). Still think about him every day

Agree with Valleys, never say never, but don't rush into it. Give it 6-12 months , need time to to grieve for Jemma, get used to life without her, and then you'll be able to love a new dog in it's own right, which it deserves.

I've got 2 pugs. Little monsters, don't recommend them to anyone. The girl is dumb as, will eat anything and has been to the vet a few times because of it, and has already gotten stoned from licking cane toads. The boy is too smart for his own good, and can understand way too many words. We have to spell things when he is around. Have had many hours of enjoyment watching the dogs drive the missus crazy.

last year my mum got the family dog put down, he was 17 years old.. very sad... he was a champion... name was plugger and he was cocker spaniel x miniture fox terrier.

bout another dog from the pound 2 years ago with my wife... dogs name is Koda's... champion... she's shepherd x kelpie x red heeler and a fair chance there could be some dingo...

Awful to hear Wedgie and I know how painful it must be for you and the family but I totally agree with FC. Get another dog soonest. As a kid we had two dogs put down the first we replaced straight away and it was so much easier to cope with by having another dog to look after especially for us kids. But when she had to go my father decided not to have another and I don't think we ever got over losing her.
