AFL rookies who have to work !!!!

Postby bayman » Wed Jul 27, 2011 9:36 pm

i missed the young fella's name who is a north melbourne rookie player & has been playing in the league team, on the show 'afl insider' last night they spoke about & too him with a little story, he has a young family & was asleep during some team meetings, brad scott spoke to him away from the other players & this player was working nights at bunnings to help pay the mortgage & feed the family etc, since then being a qualified teacher they've got him a part time teachers role with an organization that i can't recall the name off

now surely rookies who do as much work/training as listed players should earn more than they do ?

I think i heard the other night that rookies get about 35k. The AFLPA has bargained with the AFL and i believe next year rookies will get about 50k

t'was Cameron Pederson, or as they amusingly call him, "Pedo"

good story that one was. didn't wanna quit his job as a forklift driver at bunnings so he was living on 3-4 hours sleep a night, training with the Roos and working night shift at bunnings.

AFL listed rookie players are the most overworked and underpaid full time sportsmen in this country.

Hopefully with this new AFLPA agreement currently being negotiated results in a better deal for these blokes

Yep its a joke how badly they are treated when you have guys like judd and others getting hundreds of thousands outside the salary cap.

Bzzt wrong, try fringe Australian team swimmers, rowers, athletes, hockey players. The high profile ones (Sally Pearson, Steph Rice, Leisal Jones, Jamie Dwyer etc) gets well paid through endorsements. The rest live on meagre government stipends (from Institutes of sport most on ~ 25% of rookies wage) and casual work.

They train double the hours of Rookie Footballers.

But yes AFL Rookies aren't much better. Also given the demands placed on SANFL League footballers, I think AFL Rookies are quite well off.

No one gives a rats about rowers and swimmers though. Shouldn't have picked a crap "sport" no one watches.

Think you should check the TV ratings for the next Olympics games if you think swimming isn't popular.

The Olympics are rated as a whole not just individual events. If they showed a game of table tennis in between a swimming race and everyone kept their TV's on then table tennis would rate just as highly.....

Interesting one given that Pedersen played an excellent game in round 1 but then wasn't seen again in the seniors for about 2 months.

Dont rookies recieve match payments if they play senior games?

Also, after a certain amount of games go up in base salary?

They are still severely under paid for the work they must put in!

FFS, $35k should see a kid laughing all the way to the bank. What do their mates get paid who slug away for the same number of hours in a petrol station to support themselves through Uni?

Amazing how low paid the rookies are given the number of times the AFLPA have bargained for better payment, seems the big boys keep increasing their boundaries but the little men receive little more than token increases.

This fella has two kids, a mortgage and took a pay cut to keep his dream alive. $35 is severly underpaid and I hope he goes well for the work he has put in. Good luck at football and teaching pedo

Not all rookies are fresh faced 18 year olds though smac. $45k plus match payments should suffice IMO.
