SANFL finals in 2011 require neutral umpires?? (OUTSIDE SA)

Postby Norwoodman78 » Tue Jul 26, 2011 11:42 am

After hearing people's thoughts would having umpires that have had nothing to do with SANFL at all in 2011 have full involvement in the finals change things?/
I personally think it be very interesting

Umpires with even less understanding of the SANFL than the current lot?

No thanks.

Edit: And well done for working out the poll function!

Does anyone know which umpires on the AFL panel have umpired in the SANFL this season? Will they get preference for finals?

Sam Hay is one that is an SA based umpire that has officiated at the higher level (and SANFL) this season and is one of the best in SA in my opinion, I think doing the GF last year?

Gary Fila is listed as an AFL Rookie Field Umpire (I assume it is like being a player being delisted and re-listed as a rookie?) and has done SANFL games and a grand final or two in recent years.

I would have the following 3 umpries doing the GF this year:

Sam Hay
Michael Avon
Richard Williams

Whoever umpired last years grand final. Who was that? They did a good job, didn't notice them. Not Williams. I think they umpired differently in the GF,compared to during the year.

Williams was one of them - and in doing so created a record for most appearances in a Grand Final by a Field Umpire.

Did something happen on the day? I'll have to watch the replay again, as I'm sure Williams wasn't there.?? Maybe I'm confused, because I didn't think he was at the brewery for the unveiling, when they presented the umpires. Looks like from BP and spell checks research I'm wrong.

Agree Dogger. As frustrating as the ump's can be, without them you haven't got a game. SANFL need to step back a year or two and get back to basic's. Forget the AFL interpretations. Like everyone else I get p(%$Ed off with decision's but lets be frank,as long as they are fair and consistent to both teams as stated, play on
It,s a Great Great Club, and the Club we Love, We,re the good Old Red and White

I don't think Williams will get a spot, the SANFL seems to be looking at umpires aspiring to umpire at AFL level rather than someone who has already been there, done that...............regardless of who is best for the job.

A terrible umpire. The only umpire i know in the SANFL due to his inconsistency and biast calls against the bloods. any others will be good IMO

I think Dickie is one of the most consistant umpires going around, at least you know what you are going to get when Dickie is in charge. Maybe because he played Underage for Westies, he over compensates a desire to not show any bias?

I disagree that he is a terrible umpire.

That's a bit Ironic since he played U17's (and I think U 19's) for Westies, I actually think he's been one of SA's better umpires over his career

Everyone thinks Williams is against their club. He also cops a lot of anger for what other umpires do. I personally don't think he is the greatest umpire out there, but there are a lot worse.
