Here you go Spelly, just a 5 minite snippet which includes the whole extra player count or non-count... by the way what round number was this and was this also Fred Bills' last game?

Bloody awesome!!!! You (and whoever gave you the footage) are legends! Many thanks, I'll dafinitely have to show Dad this! :)

No worries, I was pretty chuffed to get this, heard a lot about it, great to see it. Could you tell me the round number and confirm if it was Bills' last game?

Cheers

It was his last match, and it was Round 15.

I think I heard a Fielke named in the commentary, who would that have been?

bays2011 that footage is deadset 24-carat GOLD. Thankyou for posting.

2 questions:

Did Cassin cop any games for that report?

The commentators were referring to "This is Torrens mistake, they've made that mistake before", or words to that effect. To what exactly were they referring?

Superb footage. Stuff like this is the heart and soul of the SANFL and I'm glad someone is making an effort to preserve the history in these days of AFL imperialism.

Three matches, according to the John Storer book. Although it would have been no real penalty as it turned out, because he was the player stretchered off with a fairly serious ankle injury, I think.

I was trying to work that out myself about "making the mistake before". I think it was Aitken who said it, and perhaps he was really referring to West Adelaide - their Reserves, who had their score rubbed earlier in the year against Woodville.

Don't think they'd allow coaches to smoke on the ground these days either.

Great footage

Yes, I must admit I was very impressed with the level of skill.

John Casson sounds like he was a star of that era, I must admit I'd never heard of him though. Anyone know his background?

I'm also curious about the Guerney who played for West, anyone know his first name?

Cassin played two seasons for Torrens - ironically the wooden spoon seasons in 1975 and 1976. However he is more known for playing with Essendon and then afterwards for North Melbourne - playing in the 1977 Grand Finals.

I didn't know he also went to Fitzroy, so he was there, too.

Thanks spelly. I think I may have even heard his name called whilst watching footage of that VFL grand final during one of those ch 7 footy marathons. I presume he was a fairly high profile recruit to the SANFL in that era.

Torrens looked to play some good footy, interesting they finished last that year. Where did West finish?

I think West finished 6th, just behind North that year
Cassin was a very handy player, judging from all the footage i have of him playing at Nth Melbourne in the late 70s, when blighty was playing at his peak also
but i didnt realise he had such a fiery temprament as shown in the 1975 footage

People shouldn't lose sight of the fact that football was fantastic in the 70s. For too long we have heard comments such as "the game is quicker these days", and people automatically take that to mean the game is better.

The emphasis on tackling and leg speed has created an illusion that today's game is quicker, and in some respects it is, but the ball doesn't get from one end of the field to the other any quicker.

Gurney's first name was David. He was one of the 3 Richmond players we got for Glynn Hewitt...who then later returned and played for us again, as he does in this clip.

It's pretty interesting that Fos Williams' "get it and kick it" style which is clearly evident in that clip is now the preferred way to beat the press/flood.

Yes West finished in 6th position, a game but superior percentage behind North. Torrens other win for 1975 was the round before - an 88 point one over Central.
