Russell Ebert, Barry Robran, Paul Bagshaw?

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Postby Strawb » Wed Feb 28, 2007 6:37 pm

I agree with Robran being a legand of the game and i am a Victorian, Who knows what barrie would have done had he been fully fit. This disagreement is like trying to pick Australia's greatest test side or the 18 greatest footballers. Everyone has a difference of opinion which is wonderful and very insightful. and for what it is worth i say Robran, Ebert then Bagshaw.

Ebert was bloody good but there was a sturt centre half back (Who's name excapes me at this time...?) Who silenced him, almost everytime...? Robran was always in slow motion...? (You had to see him to appreciate him...?) Paul Bagshaw was good also..... Ha..... These three were in a different league..... I think Paul Bagshaw brought more into the game around him...? He lifted the entire team a little more than the other two...? In my oppinion....

Saw all 3 lots of times as a Sturt follower, mid 60s to late seventies mostly..
They all seemed to have time to do what ever they wanted. Probably Ebert with his strength and attack on the ball would fare best in AFL today, though when seeing him up close, he wasn't that big; just a ball of muscle..
Bagshaw and Robran were magicians, evading 3 players when trapped on the forward pocket boundary, taking a hanger from the impossible position. All 3 were consumate team men, and modest to go with it. Its still hard to get a word out of Baggie.
A draw. Magarey Medals don't come into it. As a former ump I hated giving votes. You weren't concentrating on who was best. The press can do that.

Dont go over the top mate. Ebert was a champion, but Robran is the greatest player in the history of the SANFL, 99% of SANFL followers will say so.

NA - Darren Jarman (used to rate Sanders as a kid)
NWD - Mcintosh (from Aish or Roberts)
PA - Hodges (only saw Ebert at the end*)

Not sure how many games Mods played for west but he did play in a losing GF for them.
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

I wouldn't necessarily say daylight after Platten (but he is the best, I agree). McAdam was such an exciting player to watch, always ready to expect the unexpected with Gilbert.

Ebert and Bagshaw were Champions no doubt but Robran could play in every position on the ground and did on many occasions when he had to. You can't make that claim about Ebert and Bagshaw and that's what sets Robran above all other SANFL players back then and even now.

He was 6 ft 3 and 1/2 inches tall and played his first club and ironically also his first state game on a wing and dominated, He played club and state football at CHF, in the Centre and as a follower and also rucked on numerous occasions in both club and state football.
When he played as a follower the coaching instruction would be for either the ruckman or rover to rest fwd or back of the contest - thus allowing Barrie to rove to the ruckman or ruck to the rover. Neil Kerley has always maintained that Robran was a football cheat because of his ability to play anywhere.

Bagshaw was aknowledged as a champion / magician and also played in a brilliant and very strong Sturt team yet didn't ever win the M.M, Robran won two of his 3 in arguably the best club side this state has produced (pre Crows) based on back to back flags, a Champions of Australia Crown in which Barrie was aknowledged by the Vic media and in particualr Lou Richards as the best player in Australia. You can also throw in a losing GF btw 71 & 73. Ebert won one in 1971 yet his team was never good enough to beat North in 2 GF's when Robran was BOG in both. That tells you something about how vital Robran was to North and how much above any other North player in a team that contained some absolute North greats - it is doubtful you could make the same claim about Bagshaw and Ebert to their teams although very important and great players in very good sides.

If Robran had not been viciously cut down by Matthews mid 1974 he would have won the his 4th MM that without a doubt. History now records Ebert won the second of his 4 MM's.

Interesting comment re 1974 - Ebert won the Magarey Medal with 28 votes from 12 games - Robran scored 15 votes from 7 games. The match against Vic occurred after round 8 of the SANFL that year. I know Robran did play a few games (when clearly not recovered from his injury) with North towards the end of 1974 and made Norths Sunday Mail best players in a few games but I doubt he would have polled votes in any of these comeback matches. Lets give him at best a b.o.g from one of the post injury games. That means pre-injury he had at least polled 12 votes in six of the first 8 minor round matches! If he had played the entire 1974 season uninterrupted I think a season tally of 30 votes was attainable for him. Only Barry Stringer was a rival to consistently steal any North votes that year. And Robran still made the Advertiser Team of the Year in 1974 so his form pre injury was obviously sensational! ps I'm a Sturt fan so my comments here are completely unbiased.
