Players travelling from outside the city to play and train..

Postby GWW » Fri Jul 22, 2011 8:36 pm

I read in the paper today that Dean Mobbs lived at Mannum when he played for Centrals. I knew he was from Mannum but didn't realise he still lived there during his playing days (or at least some of his playing days) with the Bulldogs.

The most well know is probably Mick Redden and his effort to travel from the mid North each week was very impressive. Does anyone know if he drove up Saturday mornings for a game or perhaps Friday nights?

Another one was Paul Bagshaw who I believe traveled from the fringe of the city at McLaren Vale to represent the Double Blues. I remember reading somewhere (I think it was the Advertiser although it may have been on here somewhere) about a newspaper photographer, just prior to 1978 Grand Final, traveling to Baghshaw's house to get a "captains photo", also involving Norwood Captain Michael Taylor. Bagshaw it seemed was more interested on finishing some concreting than participating in the photo shoot though however :)

Are there any other SANFL country recruits who stayed in their home town rather than move to the city to play SANFL footy?

I know Trevor Sims and Rick Davies used to travel together each week from Port Victoria (I think) to play for Sturt.

Buckets Mackenzie played SANFL for the Dogs, living in Kapunda.

Not a world trip from Kapunda to Elizabeth but away games, like Noarlunga, would have meant a fair hike.

Didn't the Stringer brothers travelled down from Brinkworth or Koolunga for most of their careers.
The Bush Legends book also has a story about a Gumeracha player travelling down to play for South for a few years, not bad in the days of horse and cart.

Ron Kneebone used to make the same trip early in his career, I believe.

Steve Copping from Lucindale
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.
