Android apps

Postby smac » Wed Jun 15, 2011 2:49 pm

For those of us that have resisted the Iphone urge!

Daily use:
- K9 mail (for personal email)
- Samsung mail (for work email via exchange)
- Tune in Radio (digital radio via web - mainly use in the shed via wi-fi to save data costs)

Weekly(ish) use:
- Navigon navigation
- Australian TV time
- Samsung mobile print
- AllShare (enables me to either play media files from pc on my phone or play media files on my tv when on home network)
- SANFL app - shame it doesn't have integrated live scores but it does the job when at the footy
- AFL app - has integrated live scores, great app
- Noom workout tracker - awesome little app, uses GPS to track runs/walks
- Go Weather

Games:
- Deer Hunter
- Paradise Island (addictive little b@stard)
- Flying Penguin
- Solitaire Free Pack
- Guns'n'Glory

What I would like:
- A real 'jukebox' type app that allows easy adding of songs from my home network to a dynamic playlist

Got my work to buy an Iconia tab to try out, with a view to purchasing more for JP students. I saw them at a conference and thought they had potential. But after a week of 'playing', I can't find a lot of decent educational Android apps beyond rote learning maths / language games that are really clunky/dated, American voiced and full of inappropriate ads (thrush treatment kids?).

So I'd love to hear from anyone who has experience using these with kids - especially apps that lead to content creation rather than content consumption.

Sorry, just for fun here!

But we are getting a tab soon and I will be looking for stuff the kids can use that won't mush their brain, will post back here if I find anything.

If I was buying one for myself I'd agree - it's a great little unit and lots of fun!

No. It runs Symbian, your apps would come from the OVI store.

Bought the acer iconia a500 yesterday, kids are currently filling it with games.

After our holidays this week I'll start deleting games and adding some edumacational stuff and report back on usefulness.

What age groups are your target, zipper? I've probably got a kid in most age brackets around the house somewhere!

Edit: just notice you said JP students - got one of them here!

A500 rocks.

I used to use TuneInRadio, now I use the ESPN Radio app. Listen to ESPN New York on the way to/from work.

Never had a drop out with either of them. But I'm on telstra.

Finally found a game on Android that replaces my need for Plants v Zombies.
Fieldrunners HD, best game on the phone ever! If you like tower defense games or anything similar you'll absolutely love this! Best $2.78 I've ever spent!
