Who must go????

Postby Freo HeaveHo » Sun Apr 24, 2011 4:42 pm

This might seem like a stupid thread but in going over our list we just seem to have way too many blokes that ability wise would be in the bottom dozen in any of the top four teams in the comp. And really dont have too many that would warrant automatic selection. Couldnt see too many of our boys getting a game in collingwoods side

So who is letting us down and why ..... and what areas do we need to improve. If not all ?????

for me and im not going on just this season alone but

Brett Ebert
Marlon Motlop
Michael Pettigrew
Danny Meyer

These blokes have been in the system for a number of years and just havent shown enough and in my opinion why are they still at the club ????

With the draft concessions and the state of our list i would rather have seen the club take on more kids cause we look to have got ourselves in a position where we are going to be in the southern end of the ladder for some time. I think we have done well with the young ones we have seen this year and id rather see them get more game time cause they looked as though they were willing to have a dip.

Not really singling just them four out. there are probably another 6-8 blokes that have played a fair bit of senior footy now and are simply not good enough to take the club deep into september

Good luck Matty .... you have come in at a tough time and unfortunately your probably gonna cop some flak but some hard decisions need to be made at seasons end and its good to see that you have already shown you are willing to do it . Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards

I'd keep Ebert unless we got a 2nd round pick for him, which admittedly is unlikely. I'd like to Daniel Motlop moved on. I'd also like to sed Jonas given a chance later this year when rookie upgrade is possible, similarly I'd like to see Jacobs and Newton in the side once they've played 4 or 5 good SANFL games. Marlon is pretty much a definite de list, Pettigrew is probably a 50/50 chance to remain beyond this year as depth player. I'd be happy to see Kornes and Pearce offered as trade bait although this may only happen if GWS seriously struggle to sign anyone in the off season.

I just think both carlisle and and chappy are both no more than old fashion beat your opponent type defenders. Pettigrew really has nothing going for his game. Hes a good athlete but his decision making is poor and his skills are average at best. We really need to find some drive out or defence. chappy always looks to go sideways. back when we were flying, we had wilbur, peter burgoyne, even bish. All guys that would run and carry and kick over the lines. One thing we rarely see nowdays. We are always looking to go backwards and around the zone. Probably cause we have no one confident enough to kick through it

Matt Westhoff
Pettigrew

Thats just a start. There would be a few more.

Also I think we should be looking at some mature age recruits like what freo and carlton have been able to achieve. A Duigan down back would be useful.

Anyone that has played 50+ games between 2005 and now, anyone that has been involved in the 2007 GF disaster, the 2010 loss to Richmond on our 140th birthday celebrations, the loss to West Coast for the one club celebrations, anyone involved in the loss to the Gold Coast. Ebert, Salopek, Chaplin, Pearce, Rodan, at their best are good average but at their worst are passengers plain and simple. This culture of mediocrity has been allowed to fester for far too long.

Also Pettigrew, Matt Westoff, Marlon Motlop are no brainers...each had many years too many to grow and none have taken the opportunity.

M Westhoff is on the rookie list. Re the main list, I think its likely we may finally see some aggressive trading at the end of the season, unfortunately the trade value of players such as Pearce and Salopek would be rapidly decreasing.

Sack the bloody SKILLS coach whoever it is. I know it's ulimately the players responsibility to excute the skills of the game and to use a bit of common sense BUT the players lack of decision making ability and POOR disposal of the ball are KILLING the team.
It's not just a simple matter of getting rid of 15 blokes and getting 15 new ones in, FFS get some Skills coaches down there to bring the players up to the STANDARD required to be competitive.
You can get the most hard ball gets and be the fittest team in the world BUT if you cant execute the BASIC skills of the game then the Power will be ANCHORED for ever .

Looks like #12 and #27 are looking seriously at going to GWS next year.

Interesting comments by Jackson Trengove today on Twitter. His exact tweet was:

"Amazing night at Enrique Iglasia's concert, back stage and box seats unreal! off to watch South Sydney rabbitohs today #greatweekendwith27"

So it seems GWS are giving Jackson and and Bob the star treatment in an attempt to get them to sign. If they were taken to see GWS play yesterday it is also a bad sign as they beat top of the table Sydney Swans reserves by 64 points. The Rabbitohs happen to be playing at ANZ stadium today, where GWS will play next year.

Agreed mate. Could just about count the players you'd keep on less than 2 hands at the minute..

Boak, Gray, Hartlett, Trengove (gone), Schulz, Lobbe, Cassisi & Thomas, along with the string of young lads still finding their feet (Jacobs, Pittard, Banner, O'Shea..) and those untried (Butcher, Newton, Redden...). The rest are tradeable/delistable.

Interesting conundrum : "Given the chance to pick from Brett Ebert and Brad Ebert, who would most Port fans pick?".. :?

You'd have to say Brad right now, but I'm sure the answer would've been different 2yrs ago. ;) Tough call for mine, but only because Brett Ebert has been played out of position for 98% of his AFL career by clueless tools in the coach's box.
