Question for West Torrens fans - Bill Barrot

Postby Sojourner » Fri Jul 15, 2011 7:34 am

Wondering if any one has the win / loss ratio for the number of games that ex Richmond Player Bill Barrot coached West Torrens for in the early 1970's, and wondering if anyone has any information on the circumstances that led to him being sacked from the club midway through the season?

Bill Barrott,

pretty good player with Richmond before coming over as player/coach with torrens. I seem to remember that he didnt do particularly well; I do remember him kicking a goal from the centre of Thebby Oval on a muddy day though!!

Billy Barrot coached Torrens for 31 games in 1973 and 1974 for 13 wins and 18 losses before his contract was "terminated by mutual agreement". It was probably more of a case of the very volatile Barrot quitting than being sacked as Torrens wouldn't give him the length of contract he wanted.

Wayne Jackson. Took the Eagles into the finals. Then they named Noel Teasdale the following year who took them to the spoon.

Any mail on why Wayne didn't get the job?

I don't know the official reason, but my understanding was Wayne Jackson was on the Board of the Eagles at the time (he may have even been President, not sure), and was only filling the role as a caretaker until the end of the season.

Where were Rex Chown and Bob Morell when all this was happening?

I met a guy once who played at Torrens under Barrott. He was an ex-VFL player ( I can't for the life of me remember his name  ) And apparently Barrott use to play the Vic/SA card a lot. He'd say things like "You useless South Australians why can't you play more like these guys from Victoria." etc. Whether or not it was designed to motive the SA players to play better I don't know, but it went down like a cup of cold sick with the SA players and made the Victorian players very uncomfortable (including this gentleman).

"Big" Bob Morell was coaching a school team at the team IIRC.

Unless there's an obvious one I cannot recall, the only ex-VFL players who played for West Torrens under Barrot were Adrian Hunt, John Keast, Ian Wallace and Barry McKenzie. One other was Brian Mulvihill but he started with Torrens.

I would have thought most of those players mentioned were ex-VFA players, not VFL players. Was Dirk Inglis there at that time, or did he come later.

Inglis didn't start until 1975, Barrot was replaced half way into 1974. All of those players (except Hunt) played VFL football, and I believe Hunt played VFL reserves.

Ian Wallace played a couple of games for Footscray in 1968 as a 17 year old. He'd probably have an interesting story or two as he was coached by Charlie Sutton and his team mates included Ted Whitten, Gary Dempsey, VFA legend Fred Cook, South Adelaide captain-coach Dave Darcy and a young Peter Hines who would also go on to play for the Panthers.
