Hasnt he only just got back from overseas a month or so ago.
I guess this puts to rest the discussion on whether players get picked for these types of teams on reputation or form.....
Dont get me wrong, I know Portlock is a great player and has performed in these games in the past, but does it take away from being selected in the side if a player thats only played a handful of games and hasnt done preseason or anything to come straight in.
From what I have been told it was the selectors that contacted Portlock and therefor is certainly nothing against him. but does make a bit of a mockery of the selection process in my opinion. Surely there are plenty of qulaity players that have played a full season that could get the call up.

The other question is how can a squad that gets selected from three leagues be "ringing around" to get players??

He wasn't in the initial zone or GSFL squads for the reasons you've highlighted but made himself available for both. He was the runner for the GSFL team. Spots became available after guys who were given the first opportunity pulled out. Now you've got a 2010 All-Australian whose been committed to and performed in rep footy for best part of the last decade champing at the bit to go again - who would you call? And for the record there's been nothing wrong with his form. Unless you can name someone who deserves it more it sounds like there's a bit of tall poppy syndrome going on here.

How about you get off your high horse Grape Ape and read a post properly.
No where have I tried to "cut down" Portlock or any other players in fact I complimented him on being successful in these carnivals in the past.
My point was (as highlighted in bold) that it seems like bit of a joke if a team that has 3 leagues to pick from is ringing around to get players out. (no matter who they are ringing)

I'll repeat myself again (for grape ape) In my opinion it makes a great thing like being selected for a SD team a bit of a mockery when they are calling around to fill the team 3 days before the carnival. (makes it sound like more of a social basketball team).

In answer to your question about anyone who deserves it more I would say anyone who actually played in the GSFL / SFL association game. He was obviously a runner in that game for a reason..... Once again nothing against portlock or any other "tall poppies" just stating that 42 players played that game plus any other selectable players from KI for a reason.

On your reasoning GA if portlock is keen to play in 10 years and they have to ring around then he is the one to call..... If not at what point do they stop selecting players on what theyve done and select the side from the best that have played THAT YEAR.

reeks :o) of tall poppy grape ape. the young dingy protege is one of the best going around in the comp so why wouldn't you pick him??

Tips for this week?

Pongy to continue their winning ways vs Goolwa - 5 goals
Strath to get over the creeks - 14 points
Willunga to thump mclaren - 10 goals
Victor and Compass to have an even hit out - victor by a goal.
yank over the bays - comfortably.

He addressed his troops at training on Tuesday and informed them that he won't be coaching next year. I'm told it was the result of a mid year review from the committee.

Carroll, Hodge and Burdett made the team of the championships. According to this:

Pilmore can change that for the state side if he wants. Has the side been named?

for me
Victor easily over Compass (sadly) even at home
pongy to continue their push for the 5 with an all the way win over Goolwa
mmmm Strath to push past Creeks in the last by a couple of goals
Willunga having a training drill with their next door neighbours Mclaren
and yank putting the ebay to bed in another easy one
the top 5 definately again this year way ahead of the bottom half
though pongy are playing with a lot determination and heart for their club - if they keep this side and build on will push for finals in 2012

I'll have a crack at the tips:

Compass over VH at home narrowly. Iljescen out perhaps? 3 B's the difference (Burdett, Baulderstone, Braidwood)
Pongy over us. I think the suggested 5 goal margin is very kind but we do love playing at myponga
Creeks and Strath in a draw
Willunga easily over McLarens
Yank over Bays. Possibly close if McGregor is playing?
You can love football, but it wont always love you back!

Compass in a close one - will help us out if they can win
Strath by a couple
Willunga by 10 goals - Brown out with a hammy
Bays in an upset - Bays play sunday so McGregor should play
Pongy over Goolwa - They do play well on our deck - LF no chance to take a hanger this time!

Fairly important games this weekend for most sides, interesting read come sunday.

Compass v Victor Iljcesen not out and will kick a bag! Match of the round with 5th spot still up for grabs and Pongy lurking.
Pongy v Goolwa Pongy going for 4 in a row and look too strong for Goolwa.
Strath v Creeks Strath too good I think
McLaren v Willunga How far....
Bays v Yank McGregor to play but Yank still too strong

Pongy clearly hitting their straps, big win! Makes for a very important and interesting game this week at Victor.

Good to have such a big win and not play to our best. Goolwa clearly had a few out.
We have a huge game this week vs Victor!
