Just announced...the paper is being shut down after this Sunday's edition... this wasn't some local rag...it's one of the top selling Sunday tabloids and had a circulation of about 2.5 million...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14070733

News of the World to close amid hacking scandal

This Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper, News International chairman James Murdoch has said.

Punishing the current staff by killing a paper that's been in print for 168 years whilst leaving the former editor from the phone hacking days still in charge of News Int isn't exactly an act of contrition...wonder if it will save the BSkyB takeover instead then.

Regards
JAS

P.S. In fact according to Wiki it was the No1 Sunday paper including the broadsheets

In most corporations, the boss would resign for something like that, not counting the hundreds of millions he's just lost his shareholders on the MySpace debacle.

Not Rupert, of course, he'll just continue instructing all of us on who should govern here, in the UK and the US.

Yep The Sun is essentially the weekday version of New Of The World

Yep The Sun is the one with the 'Got the B*****d, Sadam captured' front page, continued on Page 2, Page 3 tits out...'Chardonay, 17, from Chigwell thinks it's fantastic that Sadam has been caught at last', Pages 4,5 & 6 'shock, horror, outrage Britain awash with paedo's'

Most pundits on the News shows last night reckon they will just try make The Sun a 7 day a week paper so fear not your crap tabloid porn and wanabe strippers won't disappear.

A BBC link so might not work ouside UK but Russel Howard sums up which paper is which pretty well in this...

oh dear I guess little Jimmy's plan to close the paper and sack staff who weren't even working there at the time of the scandal whilst hanging on the woman who was didn't work then. So now daddy's got to come and sort it all out...

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/notw-closes-ex ... 04409.html

Sky sources have confirmed News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch is set to fly to London as a third person is arrested by police over alleged phone hacking at the News Of The World.

Mr Murdoch, 80, is due to arrive in London tomorrow in order to confront the crisis at the NOTW and News International.

So was it the 7.5+% drop in the BSkyB share price that got him on a plane or...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/ju ... ernational
Police are investigating evidence that a News International executive may have deleted millions of emails from an internal archive in an apparent attempt to obstruct Scotland Yard's inquiry into the phone-hacking scandal.

JAS, none of this is true.

Andrew Bolt (News Ltd columnist) says that 'he has been told, but not able to verify' that it's not true.

He says this twice, so he must be right.

Tell the police that Bolt says it'a all a plot by News Ltd's competitors. :D

:)) ...and Rebekah maintains she had no idea any of it was going on at the time or that was what she was handing her journo's money for. hmmmmm if she's telling porkies then she shouldn't still be in charge of News Int...if it's true then she was a pretty poor editor if she didn't know her team had gone rogue and shouldn't still be in charge etc etc etc etc ;)

Even her good mate, the Dave Cameron, said last night in a news briefing that if it was up to him and she offerred to resign he'd have taken it.

This is front page news around the world.

In Adelaide, though, the Sunday Mail has it on Page 35.

Yes, page 35.

Limited News.

Good question, stan.

I thought they'd have it on about Page 17 ;)

At least I'm sure people realise just how much news is slanted and manipulated to suit the agenda of their wealthy owners.

I won't be an orphan enjoying the continuing saga of seeing News Ltd getting their just desserts :D

I saw that and it was more instructive for what it didn't say. Not much about old Rupert and that Brooks lady he loves. In true Ltd News fashion they're running with the "it was just a rat in the ranks" line ala the Melbourne Storm fiasco.

Shutting down NOTW was just a cynical attempt at trying to make sure Rupert's BSkyB takeover goes through a bit like James packer disappearing into the shadows at Ten in the hope the ACCC waves through Foxtel's takeover of Austar.

Not getting any better now the big cheese has flown in...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14097275

...The BBC understands News International found e-mails in 2007 that appeared to show police were paid for information.

NI says chairman James Murdoch had no knowledge of the e-mails.

The evidence of alleged criminal behaviour was not handed to the Metropolitan Police for investigation until 20 June, 2011, BBC business editor Robert Peston reported...

...He said the e-mails appear to show Andy Coulson, editor of the News of the World from 2003-2007, authorising payments to the police for help with stories.

And they also appear to show that phone hacking went wider than the activities of a single rogue reporter, which News of the World claimed at the time...

The news pundits have also been saying that, once the judicial inquiries get underway, it'll be interesting to see if this is unique to News Int or if other news organizations have been employing similar tactics.

My mail is that most "sacked" journalists are simply being moved on to the Sunday Edition of the Sun newspaper which will be aimed at the previous readership group, so I am not sure how this equals any real type of consequence over anything.

I've heard "The Sunday Sun" has now been registered as a business name by Murdoch. Nice.

Yeh Rebekah said when she gave them the news that the paper was closing that she would try and give another job in News Int to anyone who wanted one. I think there are one or two that might not take up the offer...not surprisingly some were apparently pissed at being used to try and keep her in place when they weren't even working there when the hacking etc was going on.

I believe it's 'The Sun On Sunday' that they've registered. The news programmes were pretty quick to point out as soon as the paper closure was announced that 'The Sunday Sun' is already the name of a newspaper published in the Newcastle/Tyneside area.

Sacked News of the World staff appear to have fired a parting shot at their former editor Rebekah Brooks, disguising mocking messages in the crossword of the tabloid's final edition.

Brooks, now the chief executive of News International, reportedly brought in two loyal proofreaders to sanitise Sunday's final edition of any jibes directed at her following the newspaper's spectacular demise during the phone hacking scandal.

But they failed to detect the not-so-cryptic clues that appear to savage her in the crosswords on page 47.

A source at the News of the World told the Daily Mail that "Rebekah tried everything to stop the staff having the last word and she utterly failed".

"She brought in two very senior Sun journalists to go though every line on every page with a fine toothcomb to ensure there were no libels or any hidden mocking messages of the chief executive," the source said.

"But they failed and we've had the last laugh."
