200+ club for goalkickers

Postby spell_check » Sat Jul 09, 2011 10:36 pm

My aim here is to get a full list of 200+ goalkickers. This will exclude the night series competitions, so some of the totals you see here are less than what you have might seen previously. However, at this stage if you just have the total that includes night series goals and matches, that will be sufficient. Such tallies that have had some or all of these taken out are marked with this *. Players who are excluded from the 200+ goals list owing to these goals taken out will be still recognised, as the AFL does for their 200 game club. (Which is how the SANFL should go about it with the games, too).

Apologies if any of the following are in there, not 100% with it...

471 goals, 220 games R.McLean Norwood, Port, Port - Torrens
463 goals, 246 games Stephen Copping Glenelg
439 goals but might be a bit more, 370 games, Ralph Sewer Woodville, Glenelg
433 goals, 301 games, Robert Oatey Norwood, Sturt
405 goals, 236 games, Kym Hodgeman, Glenelg

Again, sorry if any of those are in your list. Eyes not functioning too great.

It's not a complete list; there's only all of players who only played at Sturt, Port and Torrens on there. And those who played only after 1991 onwards. Others who should be on the list are Malcolm Blight, John Fidge, Greg Mellor, Stephen Nichols, Andrew Taylor, Alfred Ryan, Trevor Pierson, Gary Jones, David Marshall, Stephen Kernahan, Dennis Sachse, Darel Hart, Michael Aish, Keith Thomas, David Payne, Michael Coligan, Grantley Fielke, Leon Grosser, Lindsay Backman, David Stoeckel, Allen Jakovich, Geoff Morris, Greg Turbill, Jim Michalanney, Graham Cornes, Wilbur Wilson, Bill Ruth, Mick Nunan, David Saywell, Neville Caldwell, Rex Voigt, Graham Reed.

And there would be many more, that's why I need your help, like sapaul has - cheers for those! :)

Spelly, (or anyone else), what do you know about the Chris Munro who kicked 395 goals for West and South? The only C. Munro who played for West kicked 13 goals in 9 games, meaning he kicked 382 in 65 games for South at an average of almost 6 a game, an average bettered only by Ken Farmer I would think. Pretty fair effort, but I've never heard of him.

He was always known as Diddy Munro. He played at the same time as Farmer, Jack Owens and Bo Morton, so there were great full forwards at that time.

Thanks robran, 'Diddy' does ring a bell now. But still he seems to me to have a very low profile for someone who kicked more goals per game than anyone except Farmer.

Tractor played only 59 games and booted 182 goals. Pity we didn't see a lot more of him at Norwood, he was a top player, vice captain of the club in only his second season. I believe he was still playing, and kicking goals up to last season, not sure if he's still going.

It may interest you to know he has the highest number of goals kicked in a Norwood debut, 7 goals v Sturt at Norwood Oval in 1993.

from safc hall of fame...

Christopher "Diddy" Munro
Recruited from West Adelaide after an inauspicious three years in which he played only 9 games, C.C. (Diddy) Munro began his football career with South Adelaide in 1932, and immediately found a niche for himself as a full forward. In a brief but explosive 380 goal career of just 69 games with the blue and whites, he topped the club's goalkicking list from 1933 to 1936, and became the only South Adelaide player to ever kick 100 goals in a season, booting 115 in the premiership side of 1935, only to be pipped by the great Ken Farmer's 128. Included in this were 6 goals straight in that year's grand final. Even though he was not six foot in height, he had a great leap and made his mark in interstate competition, representing the state with distinction from 1933 to 1936.

Mr Munro often took me to the footy to watch South play when I was a little fella...

Why bother?
It's Farmer then light years, absolute light years.
Even the second place bloke is overstated/rated.
Farmer put the football world on its arse at the start of his career when he kicked 15 goals in a game one day when it was rare for a player to kick more than 3.
He also kicked 23 goals one day. What was Tim Evans' best?
North were outside the top 4 for the majority of Farmer's career in fact in his last season in 1940 Farmer kicked 125 goals and North finished 7th. Sit on that Timmy.
Farmer is the greatest goal kicker in Australian football of all time.

Here is how he ranks:

Farmer. Ken 6.198 goals per game 1st
Hudson. Peter 4.572 goals per game 2nd
Naylor. Bernie 5.306 goals per game 3rd
Lockett. Tony 4.840 goals per game 4th
Robertson. Austin (Jr) 4.724 goals per game 5th
Coventry. Gordon 4.245 goals per game 6th
Dunstall. Jason 4.208 goals per game 7th

Not sure where you got Hudson's record but he averaged 5.63 goals per game with Hawthorn, and over 7 goals per game in Tasmania. He kicked over 2,000 goals, most of them on one good leg, so I would think twice before proclaiming Farmer the greatest goalkicker of all time.

A bit biased but John Coleman surely deserves a mention. Averaged nearly 5.5 goals per game. Played only 98 games for his 537 goals. Retired from football at age 25 with a knee injury that would be fixed in 6 months these days. Most people are just hitting their peak at mid 25's so probably didnt see the best of him. Interesting that he kicked 8 or more goals in 20 of his 98 matches. Says a lot about him that he was named as VFL/AFL all time full forward ahead of these other greats
