The Scorchers then hurriedly put out a statement to clarify the position.

"The WACA believed it had reached an agreement with Usman’s management on Wednesday that the 24-year old left-hand batsman would line up for the Scorchers in the inaugural KFC T20 Big Bash League tournament," it said.

"However his management communicated to the WACA after today’s media conference that Usman was still considering his options but it is likely he will be joining another BBL team.

"WACA cricket manager Andrew Scotford says there had been a miscommunication with Usman prior to his departure to Zimbabwe to join the Australia A tour.

“After conversations with Usman and his management we were very confident that we had secured his services and could make an announcement to that end today,” Scotford said.

“However upon landing in Zimbabwe, Usman informed Mickey Arthur that as he was hoping to be playing Test cricket around the time of the KFC T20 Big Bash League, it would be more beneficial for him to seek an opportunity with a team closer to his home base in Sydney.

“We are obviously disappointed to lose a player of Usman’s calibre at the 11th hour, but the BBL contracting window has shown that as doors close others open and we look forward to making more exciting announcements in the coming days.”
