Perhaps if the staff in their donor centres had any customer service skills more than 1 in 30 people would give blood. I did it once, and one nurse in particular looked at every excuse in the book to turn me away (other nurses said I was fine, her boss said I was fine, her bosses boss said I was fine, the next level boss said I was fine). Obviously they're not that desperate for my blood so I've never gone back.
Totally agree. I'm a fairly uncommon blood type and they still find reasons to try to me away when I get there, despite me getting letters telling me they need my type.
Australia has one of the highest, if not the highest, standards for blood donation in the world. I must admit that I have a vested interest in this as I currently work for the Blood Service (not for much longer though) and can understand when people what to donate but aren't allowed to, due to past illness, travel, medication etc it can be dissappointing. Howerver if I needed any blood or blood products would want to know that these things supplied were produced with the highest quality standards...
Unfortunately you have had a bad experience, once, as the adverts say, 1 in 3 will need blood or blood products, only 1 in 30 will donate. Safety is the priority in blood supply...
I wasn' referring to health standards mate, the travelling van comes to my footy club twice a year so I try to donate there. I get there 45 minutes before they're supposed to finish up and I get turned away because, 'we've already got enough to last until 7pm' (when they were due to finish). If they were desperate enough, I'm sure they could've fit me in somewhere.

Yeah similar story with me. Turned up in the morning, they recommended I come back in the arvo after lunch. No worries, went and got some lunch. Come back, and this one nurse was like, nah we've filed your paperwork assuming you weren't coming back, come back tomorrow and I'll get the paperwork then. Every other nurse that heard this, plus the bosses she phoned, all told her to get the paperwork now and do it, but she kept insisting I come back tomorrow. Eventually she ran out of people she could refer to and I've never been back.
Also, their telemarkerters are the worst culprits at calling at dinner time trying to book you in for another donation. They got the hint after I started hanging up immediately after they identified themselves as from the Red Cross but even that took 18 months!
