Ha ha ha. Fringe b grader. That's classic. With the week off I'm heading to gumeracha to watch cally on the weekend, so we will have to keep a close eye on hamish the brave. We will count his dream team points

Something I'd wondered about too. Only thing I could come up with was that he played as on (o)verage player in the SANFL under 18's comp, and it followed him when he was transferred on sportingpulse. Could be the case as there are others with the (o). eg:

Can anyone inform as to how (P) permit players don't attract points when they play. Noticed a couple on Yank's team sheet. This isn't anything sinister either by the way!

I think we'd all like to know that.

They have 3 actually - Warmington, L Durdin and Perry. From what I can work out I think it is because they played the majority of their last yr at Port in the under 18's, even though they played some reserves too. The points system says:

A player who has played a majority of matches for the Senior team of a Club or Clubs in a Category One or Two League in their previous playing season – an additional three (3) points should be added in the case of a Category One League and an additional two (2) points should be added in the case of a Category Two League.

They didnt do that so are zero points. Warmington played a year of A grade in the country prior to that too (won a mail medal I think too). Makes a bit of a mockery of the system really.

I've no problem with Yank making the most of the opportunity either - do your best within the rules I say. If that is the "loophole" then it should be closed that is all.

Whats everyones thoughts on Portlock being "selected" for the Southern Districts side this weekend in Pirie.
Hasnt he only just got back from overseas a month or so ago.
I guess this puts to rest the discussion on whether players get picked for these types of teams on reputation or form.....
Dont get me wrong, I know Portlock is a great player and has performed in these games in the past, but does it take away from being selected in the side if a player thats only played a handful of games and hasnt done preseason or anything to come straight in.
From what I have been told it was the selectors that contacted Portlock and therefor is certainly nothing against him. but does make a bit of a mockery of the selection process in my opinion. Surely there are plenty of qulaity players that have played a full season that could get the call up.

The other question is how can a squad that gets selected from three leagues be "ringing around" to get players??

All this zone footy is crap
Never the strongest side because the best players to scared to get injured
The loss of $s would be to much
Feast, Carroll to name a couple
There has to be a better way
Perhaps the Community Football mob could work something out and earn their money

I hear that there was only 17 or 18 at training on the Monday night and then only 22-23 on the Wednesday night. Looks like if you went to training you got a game. Seems to be a bit of a joke. I would say half the problem is that the SFL players don't get a 'bye' this week and thier respective teams still play, hence if the better players go to the carnival they a) miss out on match payments and b) thier side may suffer without them and could cost them a win/finals birth/top four finish. The GSFL players don't really have much of an excuse other than risking injury which would happen no matter what game you were playing in.

Agree decisions like selecting Portlock (no offence to him, as others have mentioned) seem to make a mockery of the system, but good on him for sticking his hand up.

He wasn't in the initial zone or GSFL squads for the reasons you've highlighted but made himself available for both. He was the runner for the GSFL team. Spots became available after guys who were given the first opportunity pulled out. Now you've got a 2010 All-Australian whose been committed to and performed in rep footy for best part of the last decade champing at the bit to go again - who would you call? And for the record there's been nothing wrong with his form. Unless you can name someone who deserves it more it sounds like there's a bit of tall poppy syndrome going on here.

How about you get off your high horse Grape Ape and read a post properly.
No where have I tried to "cut down" Portlock or any other players in fact I complimented him on being successful in these carnivals in the past.
My point was (as highlighted in bold) that it seems like bit of a joke if a team that has 3 leagues to pick from is ringing around to get players out. (no matter who they are ringing)

I'll repeat myself again (for grape ape) In my opinion it makes a great thing like being selected for a SD team a bit of a mockery when they are calling around to fill the team 3 days before the carnival. (makes it sound like more of a social basketball team).

In answer to your question about anyone who deserves it more I would say anyone who actually played in the GSFL / SFL association game. He was obviously a runner in that game for a reason..... Once again nothing against portlock or any other "tall poppies" just stating that 42 players played that game plus any other selectable players from KI for a reason.

On your reasoning GA if portlock is keen to play in 10 years and they have to ring around then he is the one to call..... If not at what point do they stop selecting players on what theyve done and select the side from the best that have played THAT YEAR.

Maybe wait for Feasty to actually get picked in the squad before you have a dig at him for not putting his hand up to play.

Just on Portlock, the guys a gun. So what if hes been away, a bit green to play in the association game but is back to his old form after 4-5 weeks. Hes one thats put his hand up over the years so good on him to get the call, probably why he did. Easy to focus on negatives but they'll still go close or will win it.

From what I've heard Speccy and qwerty are on the money. Apparently the SFL have run the the selection process, with some interesting selections and poor communications. Following on from this there were poor numbers at training the officials have were forced to do the ring around - so there are some players in the Zone side that didnt even make the association sides.

As others have said - well done to Mitch and the others for saying yes - BUT.....What a cock-up!
