It was only ever a marketing exercise anyway, so how well he plays, or otherwise, is probably not the main judging criteria.

I'd expect him to return to the NRL when his current contract expires.

Hasn't changed. Will never make a front line AFL player, and Gold Coast would have been better served recruiting 4 very good 100 game players for the money they've wasted on Hunt.

They wouldn't of got that money to spend on anyone else though. Same as GWS with Falou.

People have been to harsh on Hunt. For someone who has come from a completely different sport, and thrown in to the highest competition around, I think he has done okay.

Yeah he'll never be a star but will be at the very worst a serviceable player. Worse AFL players than Hunt going around that's for sure and he's only going to get better.

Because, what the game really needs is millionaire players who will "never be a star". Worse players? Maybe? Not a lot worse though, and they are 18 and not earning the lolly K-Hunt is. I look for value for money, and this guy had been an epic fail. It just intrigues me the number of people who think it's been a success. As for "only get better", where's the guarantee of that? The guy has a rugby league build, not an AFL player's build and will always struggle.

You don't get it do you Adelaide Hawk. Hunt and Falou have been signed as marketing tools. Their performance on the field is secondary to how much media attention they can grab in the league states. If they turn out to be okay footballers, then that's a bonus.

The sad thing, TSG?

You are absolutely right.

Now what happens when Israel Folau is playing centre half back, ahead of some young kid, that kid gets jack of it, and becomes a 200 game premiership player elsewhere, and the AFL's newest club stays in the doldrums...

If Karmichael Hunt was one of the young draft picks for GCS, as opposed to being "Karmichael Hunt the rugby convert", then based on performance, he would have played maybe one AFL game...

Both clubs don't/won't have alot of depth in there list. Won't be a problem for a few years.

Exactly. If it gets kids in NSW and Qld more interested in football then it's money well spent. FWIW I reckon that Hunt has gone pretty well. He has shown glimpses of potential. As the commentators keep saying..if you judge him as a million dollar player he is a complete dud. But if you judge him on the amount of time he has spent playing the game then it's fair to state that he's done pretty well.

Hunt is sort of like an Irish import that happens to be on a better wicket because we are farting in the face of Rugby League. And that's a fart worth smelling.

An example of the Hunt/Falou experiment, all be it on small scale was last Saturday night in Darwin. The town is split 50/50 AFL/NRL. Thunder v GWS crowd was the biggest for awhile. Plenty of people wearing rugby tops and asking what number Falou was.

A number of AFL players floating around in the SANFL or SANFL reserves he's better than and that's just in this state.

I don't change my thoughts...

There is many a spud, but he is simply the worst current player, and looking to the future, the other young one's will likely get reasonably better, where K Hunt will be playing for many a year, as a spud.

Karmichael Hunt to the AFL

Postby cripple » Thu Jul 07, 2011 6:28 pm

Not a spud, becoming a very servicable player who still has a significant upside. In regards to being the worst afl player, absolute joke. Think about the mule cook, mark blakes and those that get delisted without ever playing a game. Take the money out of the equation and we wouldn't be talking about his skill level or being the worst player in the
Comp.

So they should. 18 years old and brought up playing the game. Hunt is 24, born in New Zealand and played rugby league since 4 years old.

Which is exactly why he is 1) The worst player in the competition, and will be the second worst when Folau pulls on the jumper next year, and 2) should never have come to the AFL in the first place.

If the extra publicity he generates is enough to get a few more people to games, and a few youngsters taking up the game in NSW, no one (the AFL or GWS) will really care that he isn't a star and is likely to only a small career in the AFL.
