When you can't beat the only team below you, at home, it's not easy being optimistic.

After watching Sturt last week i thought they would be lucky to win a game for rest of the year. Did say last week that North must not undo its good work against Glenelg by losing to Sturt if they want to play finals.

Shouldn't that read North must not undo its good work against Glenelg by losing to Sturt if they want to avoid the spoon.

Maybe but i seriously thought North would be making a late charge for finals.

Inconsistent is a bye word for North these days. Essentially the same team as last week bar two players, although if you can read anything into the stats, Jimmy Allen had a quiet day by his standards.

Both teams went into this game with the same pressures and same hopes. North had done exceptionally well to brush aside Glenelg last week and would have been hoping to capitalise on that win and send Sturt on a direct path to the wooden spoon.

Likewise, Sturt would have been hoping to follow up it's good games against Torrens and West Adelaide (ignoring the loss to Norwood) by applying themselves equally well against North and moving clear off the bottom.

As it was, North started the better side during the first term, just edging out Sturt at crucial moments. However, after getting the first goal of the second term, North seemed to retreat into it's shell and hand over complete control to Sturt. The Blues initially blew that dominance, kicking 1.4 to 1.2 by the half way mark, but then capitalised kicking another 4 goals and scooting to a 17 point lead at half time. North fought back well in the third, controlling the quarter for all but the last few minutes. Alas for them, the good work they did do, was undone in those last few minutes when Sturt sneaked home two goals to hold on to an 11 point lead.

The last term was a real arm wrestle. To be fair, North threw down the gauntlet and really put it to Sturt, but just couldn't get the score on the board, in fact after Sturt scored a goal in the first 30 seconds, North managed just a few behinds for the next 15 minutes, then Sturt goaled and went 23 points clear and the fat lady was clearing her throat. For some reason, North clicked and banged home 3 goals in 5 minutes to put the game up for grabs. To Sturt's credit, they really strangled the game and held the ball up, missed some chances themselves and got the points.

So a gutsy win by the bottom team over the second to bottom team...

Neither side are outright, hopeless spooner teams, they just don't seem to know what to do at crucial moments...

Both teams still have hope, a couple of wins and you're suddenly within striking distance of 5th...

THE TURNING POINT

2ND QTR
NA 5-1
ST 3-6

Both sides having scored 1 goal each for the 2nd qtr
ST had kicked 1-4 to NA 1-1 in the term
NA got a the ball deep into attack
NA had 2 forwards to a lone defender
Last weeks hero Johnny Boras dropped a simple mark and what looked an almost certain goal

The score should have been
NA 6-1
ST 3-6

It became this at half time
NA 5-2
ST 7-7

LAST QTR
NA 10-6
NA 11-10
About 7 minutes to go
I think it was Galman who had a gettable set shot for goal that he missed
Would have made it a 4 point game with NA kicking the last 3 goals if he converted

It was Gallman MAL, and you could add the miss-pass from Ackland that gifted Sturt another goal in the 1st minute of the last qtr, but hey, the game is about 18 players on the oval for 4 qtrs and I guess it isn't really fair to just pick out one or two events.

Geez North must be a tough club to follow, when everything starts to look good things turn to poo pretty quick.

At least they play a decent style of football now.
