Good news... but I find it slightly unnerving that all the talk about "SA football" seems to ignore the SANFL. One gets the impression that "SA football" encompasses the 2 AFL clubs plus a bit of junior development, and the SANFL exists somewhere outside this field of concern. I would feel more comfortable if the SANFL was explicitly considered as a party to these proceedings; mostly to reduce the risk of collateral damage in the future.

Still somewhat none the wiser, one feels the sword of damocles hanging over the SANFL comp until the AFL pulls the two licences lever and then maybe our fate will be revealed. I have no trust in the AFL whatsoever and nor should any of our clubs, as PhilH said so far so good...so far indeed.

MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

AFL Chief Executive Andrew Demetriou said today the AFL Commission and the SA Football Commission had now completed discussions around the model of support for the game in South Australia over the next three years.

Mr Demetriou said the impending move of football in South Australia to the Adelaide Oval was a tremendous step forward for the game in the state and reaffirmed the SA Football Commission’s view that the Port Adelaide and Adelaide Football Club’s capacity to compete strongly was vital through the transition period.

“All sections of the football community in South Australia and the AFL Commission are extremely grateful for the support of the South Australian government for the return of football to the city at Adelaide Oval,” Mr Demetriou said.

“Football in South Australia needs two strong clubs in Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows competing strongly on the national stage and the AFL competition wants both teams to have every chance to bring success to their supporters.

“This financial model negotiated with the SA Football Commission for the two AFL clubs in South Australia is aimed at ensuring the long-term health of both clubs, with the benefits of two strong football clubs flowing through to all levels of football in the state,” he said.

Mr Demetriou said the commercial arrangement included:
A grant to the Port Adelaide Football Club from the AFL of $1 million for each of the three years (2011, 2012 and 2013)
A loan to the SA Football Commission from the AFL of $2 million per year for each of the three years (2011, 2012 and 2013) to be provided as grants to the Port Adelaide Football Club, representing a total grant to the club of $9 million over three years
The AFL to provide a facility for the SA Football Commission to draw up to $1.5 million per year for three years (2011, 2012 and 2013)
The SA Football Commission will provide a financial package valued at $1 million per year to the Adelaide Football Club over three years (2012, 2013 and 2014), representing a total contribution to the Crows of $3 million.

“During negotiations, it became clear that while Port Adelaide does need assistance for the short-term period before the move of football to the Adelaide Oval, it was also important for further support to be provided to the Adelaide Crows, to enable them to also expand their activities,” Mr Demetriou said.

“I wish to thank SA Football Commission Chairman John Olsen and Executive Commissioner Leigh Whicker for their role in bringing together all parties in South Australian football to ensure a united approach over the next three years in the transition to Adelaide Oval,” he said.

As part of the gradual move to Adelaide Oval, Port Adelaide will host the Round 24 game against Melbourne at the ground.

Mr Demetriou said the AFL and the SA Football Commission had also held discussions around further off-field support for the clubs in South Australia and their governance structure.

As part of these discussions:
The SA Football Commission and the AFL will review both the Adelaide and Port Adelaide Football Club licences to determine the best governance structure for both clubs ahead of a move to a redeveloped Adelaide Oval; and,
The SA Football Commission and the AFL will work with Port Adelaide and Adelaide to finalise the revenue-sharing and rental model for matches at Adelaide Oval, with a deadline of December 31, 2011.

Mr Demetriou said the AFL Commission was pleased that all discussions had resulted in a positive outcome for both South Australian clubs.

“I want to again state for the record the clear position of the AFL Commission is that the best model for the national competition is to have two strong well-run clubs in the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide.”

You know if I wasn't a worry wart and a conspiracy theorist, I as a member of the NFC would ask the board to sell off our interest in the SANFL, 1/9th of Football Park, as at 30th June 2011 and start up another competetion called SAFL before the debt and the claws of the AFL gobble up the SA Football Commission and in turn the SANFL and its clubs, us

Get out before they get us for nothing near our true value.

This debt is mounting and seems to all fall back on the SA Football Commission

I smell a rat and at the moment the rubbish bin holds $12million dollars.

Just a thought mind you

I'm concerned that the AFL seems to be consumed by dominating not only all things Aussie Rules in this country, but also looking to control other sports who present themselves as a challenge to them. You need look no further than the recruitment of big name Rugby players who are very ordinary footballers.

I have considered for some time the AFL would like nothing more than to have the major football competition in SA become an under 21 feeder competition to the AFL.

I ache for the future of football, and am so thankful I watched footy in the 60s/70s/80s ... when there was no AFL.

THE AFL's "revival package" will cost the SANFL its two AFL licences is the headline according to the Ruccitiser:

Rucci doesn't miss a chance when it comes to "doomsday" predictions and sticking the knife into the SANFL.

He's also happily had the AFL clubs kill off the Port Magpies in the paper today.

Incorrect, when that happens it'll be the Port Power alone who are responsible for that act of bastardry.

Uncoditional is quite clear I would have thouught but why would people not be skeptical after all this is the same man who went behind the backs of the SANFL for 2 years and was speaking to the SACA about Adelaide Oval.

Im probably missing something here, but if the local AFL clubs get handed their own licenses, dont they then become the AFL's responsibility and all funds generated from the sale of West Lakes can remain with the SANFL? (in which case it wouldn't be the end of the world, far from it)

So SA Football will be further in debt with more money to pay out whilst needing bigger AFL crowds to break even from AFL games at traditionally the worst venue in the nation to hold big events when people will have less money to spend thanks to rising state fees and taxes.
I don't see how anyone could put a negative spin on such a great development Booney!

Someone has to pay for the redevelopment! ;)

So if the move to Adelaide Oval does not go ahead and the SANFL goes further into debt while crowds and revenue from Footy Park continue to drop and without the assistance of the AFL, what then happens?

At least the SANFL can confidently plan for the next 3 years before the move to AO as opposed to going further into debt. Surely that is a positive?

Pray Port Adelaide gets 8000 extra fans plus someone who can run the club who isnt clueless.

Or

Get the Tasmanian Gov to pay out Ports debt and ship them over to become the Port Arthur Power. AFL can essentially kill two birds with the one stone with this move.

Its just a matter of when not if for option B IMHO.

You believe this, truly?

The AFL have just spent millions developing and creating second sides in NSW and QLD, the non traditional Aussie rules staates. Do you truly believe they would leave one of the aussie rules heart lands with only one side?

I think the AFL will do all it can to continue it's support of Port Adelaide, in turn, SA being a two club state. No doubt about that at all.

The SANFL is going further into debt to a tune of 6million over the next 3 years. Belts will needed to be tightenened and I would expect that the overall annual dividends to the SANFL clubs currently at $ 4.3million will be trimmed back a $1 million per year to assist in the repaying of the grant to the Power.

Sorry, should have clarified. The SANFL will avoid going further into debt with any institution that wants 10% or more interest...

My point really is, without these grants/loans, where would footy in SA be in 3-5 years?
