Round 14 - Indigenous Round

Postby Big Phil » Sun Jun 26, 2011 9:11 pm

Congratulations to the SANFL for introducing an Indigenous Round for this week, round 14.

I believe there will be former Indigenous stars of the SANFL at all the various grounds and there will be some radio interviews as well.

Also, this Tuesday, the SANFL site is having a 'Live Chat' with Andrew McLeod and Sturt's Joe Anderson.

I beleive the following Aboriginal fellas will be guests at various games:

Gilbert McAdam, Wilbur Wilson, Sonny Morey, Harry Miller Jnr, Michael O'Brien, Eddie Hocking, Shane Tongerie, Eugene Warrior, Troy & Shane Bond, Byron Pickett, Corey AhChee, Gavin Wanganeen, Matt Cooper and Shannon Motlop.

Great work by the SANFL.

Norwood have a bye during this round.

Sadly we deserve to, our record with Aboriginal players isn't too hot.

Can you name a few topsy?

In recent times, I can think of Austin Wonaeamirri, Roland Ah Chee, Matthew Ahmat, Iggy Vallejo...

It's not a proud record when compared to other clubs.

Poulter, Palm and Turbill all played for us in the seventies, Eugene Warrior could also be added to the more recent list.

Calling Adelaide Hawk.

David Palm wasn't/isn't indigenous. Are you sure Turbs is indigenous?

I'll add a couple of other names: John Clarke, Joe Ahmat, Paul Motlop, Robbie Ahmat.

Surprised you as in WTF is Topsy on about now or that Turbs is Aboriginal?

I was surprised when I found out he was, do you reckon our club custodians knew it when they made him captain?

TW, Poulter maybe but Palm and Turbill

I agree with the first comment our record with aborignal players has not been good, perhaps we do not understand their
culture enough or, they do not understand ours?

Somewhere there has to be middle ground, we need the flair and brilliance of aboriginal players, I site Austin Wonamerri
as our last case, absolutely brilliant, and much loved at the club, but somehow, never quite fit into the Norwood genre

Perhaps we should talk to clubs like Centrals, Port Magpies, North Melbourne, Essondon and Richmond to get a complete
understanding of how we can be more successfully attract and consolidating aboriginal players into the future.

Cheers,

Cheers,
