Best mature age players equal to Callinan?

Postby Sojourner » Sun Jun 26, 2011 5:28 pm

Enjoyed Callinan's match for the Crows today, got to thinking, who else is running around in the SANFL that is a mature age player and equal or better to Callinan at the end of last season prior to his AFL training?

Ferguson and Ezard from West, Gum from Sturt, Thomas and Spurr from Dogs, Kirkby from Bays, Pfeiffer and Campbell from Legs, Jarrad from Eags. Not Allen or Allan. Some of these are prob too advanced in age but regularly outplay those that get promoted to AFL during the year.

At the end of last season, I'd say Lower, Duigan and Puopolo were up there as decent mature age types

I posted this on another thread but relates here too:

I do agree that there would be 35+ players every week in the SANFL that are better than Crows or Ports bottom 10 players each week. You could improve either of our AFL sides by adding 5 of the top SANFL players and still leaving room to get games into some developing kids.

Power have got guys like Lobbe, Pittard, Moore, D.Stewart, Jacobs, O'Shea who right now are not as good as a heap of guys running around in the SANFL.

I'll run the risk of attracting Jk's derision but I reckon McGuiness wouldn't look out of place on an AFL list.

I think Mark McKenzie is as good as any. A complete footballer.

One of the few standouts for the Bays this year, Ben Kane could certainly be part of a midfield rotation in the AFL, probably didnt have the motor he has now when he first had a crack.

He was probably trying to fit in with the general vibe of the thread by nominating players who wouldn't have a hope of making it at AFL level.

He's very slow so how can he be the complete footballer?

Not as old as some but at age 22 Steve Morris would be a walk up start for the Power and Crows at present

I looked but couldn't find Dutschke or Spurr on this thread?
