Review South vs Eagles

Postby Sojourner » Sat Jun 25, 2011 6:43 pm

South 14-10 (94)
Eagles 11-13 (79)

Good signs for South today on the stats we had less of the ball and less of the free kick count, yet managed a good hard fought out win anyway. Wundke played a very good game today and I felt that we started to show some evidence of our lads gelling together on the field, was very impressed by our ability to regather the ball from stoppages along with several passages of very clean roving down the centre smack on the chests of our forwards.

Eagles players looked like they were happy to turn up and get a few easy kicks and weren't prepared to show some leadership or do the hard work. Hard to think of a four-quarter performer.
South, on the other hand, put in for the full four quarters with good skills at times, average at others.
Wundke's goalkicking on a windy day was a treat to watch.

Don't know where the Eagles are the moment. Last month has been pretty average, and we are lucky to have an extra 1 1/2 wins on the board.

4 of their losses have been against the bottom 3 sides. :?

Something new for South- a 4 quarter effort -and look what happens!
South didnt have a passenger all day and had good contributions from Liddle,Wundke,Cross and Stribling. Cockshell seemed to find a bit of the ball as a tall forward and I also thought Bass played his best game for the club -his 2nd efforts at ground level were good as well. Former South player Craig Parry obviously forgot that the game was on telly and will be in a bit of strife at the tribunal I would think. The umpiring particularly from one particular umpire was absolutely inept and he is clearly not of the standard required at this level. Go Panthers.

South wanted it more and deserved their win. Eagles had few contributors. Thought Jarrad, McKenzie, Goldsworthy and Day were all reasonable. Too many players went missing - Rowntree, Lewis, Treeby to name a few. The Eagles side looked unbalanced. Salter should have played FF instead of Hentschel. 3 losses to the 3 bottom teams and the purple socks do look terrible.

Forward pocket or CHF perhaps?

I've always rated Salter as a better lead up full forward from the goal square as opposed to a 2nd or 3rd forward (or as a defender).

While Salter is there, in the reserves to get some footy into him. Although he'd probably need to play CHB as the ball might not get down to him otherwise. Don't get me wrong, I still think Hentschel could be valuable to the team this year, but at the moment think it is important to keep Staple playing that 3rd forward role with Grocke/Salter until Hentschel demands a spot.

Can't remember the last time that South won the ressies and the seniors on the same week. I liked Cross' game today. Good attack on the ball. Stribling and Liddle put in their usual hard working efforts. Mackay is still a few weeks away from Crows consideration.

A good four quarter effort today, but we need to see something on the road.

And maybe Salter for kicking a player on the ground in the final 10 minutes could also be pulled up?

Doesn't look like that one appeared in his stats though :)

Fantastic effort. Wanted it more than the opposition today. Got a contribution from just about everybody today in some form which was pleasing.

The second quarter effort was pivotal in South's win. Defensive effort was very good but the Eagles did waste some opportunities.

Wundke's kicking has improved greatly as the season has progressed, and is proving to be a great pick-up. Young Brown really threw himself into the contest, and could have had a couple of goals if he had his kicking boots on. Our backline (Crabb, Sandery, Talia, Thewlis in particular) pretty good all day.

McKenzie very good yet again for the Eagles, but he didn't have many mates. Lewis had a rare quiet day against us.

56 free kicks paid for the day according to sanfl.com. Some were as soft as you'll ever see. Interesting to see what happens with the Parry/Brooksby "incident" on the wing. Had a good view of that one. Sheer stupidity.

Well done to the 2s on their first win of the season too :D

Brooksby did win an Oscar nomination for his acting though. Still, he hit him, will get at least 2.

Agree on that. Wasn't much force behind it. Just silly though.

Well done by South today. Did what they did to us at Noarlunga last year. just too quick and determined.
Eagles again suffer the after bye let down and unfortunately we are not as good as we think we are!!
and the reserves were and have been woeful. A problem in that side with desire

Eagles problem is that the coach keeps pumping them up and I think he thinks they are better than they actually are.

Great win by the guys!!

South came out alot more determined than the Eagles from the start. They used the breeze well ( 5 goal breeze). Thewlis, Stribling, Liddle, Cross played really well. Crabb in defence held up the backlines.
Wundke up forward kicked better than I have seen him for most of the year.

To me, the Eagles did not look "switched on" at all. I reckon they came to Noarlunga with the mind set that it was all going to fall into place and were going for a walk in the park.....they got a very rude shock!!

McKenzie, Jarrad stood out and held the flag up with some solid football. I do like the way McKenzie plays - always seems to put in for the Eagles no matter what.
Not enough workers for the Eagles unlike South who backed their team mates up. A few lazy players today for the Eagles.

Parry with the headbutt....well, I dont care what people say - a headbutt is a "Dog" act!!! I can handle a punch but to headbutt a player is not on in my books.

South v Port at Alberton next weekend.......should be a cracker game and a fight for the 5th spot.

:D
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!
