Selectors dont like dropping people who perform in WORLD tournaments.
That one trick pony in our last WORLD tournament final did this
2/11
57 not out [opening the batting]
vrs WI

His away batting form in India, NZ and WI is pretty good for a OTP
Oh thats right he opens the batting overseas......

The 'one trick pony' comment was in reference to the fact that he can't bat well anywhere but in the opening position or top order. He is not going to open in Australia's best side and there are heaps of guys that are better batsmen than him that will or should be in the top 6 before he is. The fact is that he isn't flexible enough to adapt his game to be successful down the order. A fact that you have acknowledged. Another fact you have acknowledged is he is more of a batsman than a bowler. His bowling is ordinary at best.

I disagree RR - I think Watson's bowling is much better than ordinary and I could find you numerous examples that could back that up. In fact Mal has posted one of those above - 2/11 in the Champions Trophy final.

People are quick to jump on the "Bag Watson" bandwagon and I might have occasionally myself, but allround-type players similar to Watson need to be given time to flourish - look at Flintoff and Symonds.

Watson's had five years to flourish albeit injury riddled.
His bowling's pus.

Rod's spot on about his batting down the order.
He looks good opening - but until Hayden and Gilchrist have gone, he ain't going to bat there.

Fair point Mal about his last WORLD final performance.

I think that's the best option, as Mal's a stickler for Watto. Got to admire his tenacity.

WATSON THE FACTS

BATTING

OPENING O/D GAMES = BATS WELL WITH A GOOD S/R[same S/R as HAYDEN]
BATTING AT NUMBER 7 O/D GAMES= BATS FAIR BUT SLOW COMPARED TO MOST NUMBER 7S
BATTING IN TESTS TOP ORDER= I THINK HE WILL MAKE IT [HOW MUCH DID HE MAKE IN A P/CUP FINAL ???]
BATTING 7 AS ALLROUNDER TESTS = ??? SUSPECT V QUALITY SPIN

BOWLING

5TH BOWLER IN OD GAMES = ACCEPTABLE IN 5TH BOWLER STANDARDS[AS FRONT LINE ....NO]
ALLROUNDER IN TESTS = MIGHT BE BETTER SUITED THAN O/D GAMES ????

SUMMARY

GOOD CORRECT BATSMAN WHO IS BEST SUITED TO OPENING[OR TOP ORDER]
BOWLING NEEDS IMPROVEMENT[ESPECIALLY FLAT TRACKS]
IS NOT A HACK
PERSONALITY TRAITS GIVE PEOPLE THE SHITS
INJURY PRONE
WHEN HAYDEN + GILCHRIST RETIRE THE OPENING SPOT IS HIS IN O/D [and then we can judge or fudge]
WORTH A SPOT IN ANY SIDE, BUT NOT AN AUTOMATIC SELECTION

mal, i don't disagree with most of that. I do think his bowling in any form of the game is rubbish but i won't argue with you on that. He is a sound batsman with a solid technique. No doubt if given enough opportunities he would perform steadily in the top order in both Tests and One-dayers but there are simply plenty of other batsmen around the place that are and should be way ahead of him for a spot in the top order. He is only selected on the basis that he bowls and frankly that side of his game is quite poor IMHO. Purely as a batsman there is no way he would go close to a spot in the Australian team in either form of the game.

The selectors are probably keen for him to take over as an opener who will
bowl a few overs here and there when gilCHRIST and Haydo finish up.
They wont drop him if his form is adequate at worst.
The man in the hot seat could be HODGE unfortunately.

Think that the lad from Holland could be in for a tough time from Tait after he publicly stated that "the Scottish lad's said that Lasith Malinga is quicker than Tait". Not that it bothers me if he is but it didn't appear that Tait was going all out against Scotland and was it just me or did he appear to be bowling with a quicker run-up and a more upright action against the Scots?
