Best Crowds This Century ?

Postby PhilH » Mon Jun 20, 2011 2:01 pm

Amidst all the negative publicity about the SANFL around at the moment thought it would be good to put a focus on something positive.

As it stands the SANFL has a real chance to record the best crowds so far this century.

Currently as at the end of Rd 12 the top five averages per game this century stand as
2001 season - 3,502 per game
2002 season - 3,485 per game
2011 season - 3,469 per game
2010 season - 3,405 per game
2008 season - 3,352 per game

The best total crowds for the minor round this century was
- 2002 when 279,113 attended over the 90 games
- 2001 when 278,805 attended over the 90 games
- 2010 when 276,603 attended over the 90 games
- 2008 when 275,842 attended over the 90 games

So to reach 279,114 and have the best SANFL crowds this century

we need 116,059 to attend the final 43 games or just 2,699 per game

Each week I will update the figures to see how we are tracking.

Great stats, as always, Phil. It is fantastic to see more people getting along to SANFL football.

It will be interesting to see if we (the SA Football public) can crack that record, let's certainly hope so.

I think we have been lucky so far this season with reasonable weather and what I would describe as 'fair to reasonable' fixturing from the league.*

(* I guess last weekend was a prime example of where the scheduling could have been better to maximise attendances across all the games)

Without looking too far ahead at the program, let's hope there's some scheduled blockbusters coming up that will help draw the bigger crowds and the weather stays reasonable.

Should be a good crowd to help kick start this coming Round on Friday night for the Legs v Sturt game at The Parade, a good opportunity for neutrals to attend.

I know I'll be there for sure :D

Whats the record at Elizabeth?
Rd 22 v Norwood is shaping up as a massive game. Would be perfect it that game is for minor premiership.

In the post-1991 era, biggest I've seen out there would be 8000 against Sturt in 2002.

A couple of opportunities to push that record later in the season - not only the abovementioned Norwood game but the stand-alone game against Sturt a few weeks prior would probably attract quite a few neutrals (if Sturt were having a better season, this game could have probably cracked 9000-10000).

Just a question for you Dogs fans, based only on what I read on here .. Which teams supporters typically, do you think do and don't travel well to Elizabeth?

North, Glenelg and Port supporters generally travel well to Elizabeth no matter what the on-field form is.

Norwood and Sturt supporters travel well when the team is doing well but tend to drop off when the teams are struggling.

South, West and Eagles supporters tend to have very small travelling support to Elizabeth regardless of form.

Thanks mate, from the gibes I'd seen on here I thought maybe the Bays fans didn't travel up there much (which I thought odd because they generally seem good travellers) .. None of the others come as much surprise.

The Bays had been one of the best travelling sides to Elizabeth until Saturday, there was stuff all there especially the snouts around by the interchange bench. I was very surprised at the lack of numbers from them.

Sorry Phil but I don't agree. The population of Adelaide has grown at 1.2% per year for some time now.

If 3,502 is compounded at that rate for 10 years then we would be acheiving 3,946 per game to keep up with the population growth. In other words, in real terms we are slowly slipping backwards and clubs will find it increasingly difficult until they change their business plan.

Well if it's a per captia percentage we judge crowds on you may be correct

But as it's heads through the gate that everyone counts its an interesting (Sobering) but irrelevant point to the question.

Come to think of it ....... maybe we should compare SANFL crowds per game per capita with WAFL, VFL, NEFL etc, would only further highlight the leagues strength of support compared with other state competitions..... so going point

IIRC, the centenary game Norwood v Sturt at the Parade in 2001 was pushing 14K. Would be interested if anyone has the actual crowd figures.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Matt , I was TOLD AND READ that your contingent of supporters at Elizabeth on the weekend was woeful , are you disputing that and saying it was a good healthy crowd of Bay fans ? You seem to know it all. I assume you went so you can tell us first hand. ;)
