A RECENT study commissioned by the AFL has identified South Australian club Woodville-West Torrens as the most effective developer of AFL talent in the country.

The Eagles had 19 players from their metropolitan zone selected at the NAB AFL Draft during the study period between 1998 and 2010 from Matthew Pavlich and Brett Burton right up to recent first-round draftees from last year in Jared Polec and Brodie Smith....

Do the Eagles get some sort of tangible reward for this? A trophy, money, anything?

No?

Then it's patronising in the extreme. Boo to the AFL indeed.

They only did it by raping and pillaging poor Port Adelaide. For shame.

I thought Sacred Heart College had the record? Particularly if you apply their ridiculous draftees per participants formula. Interesting to see the size of the catchment of the TAC under 18 clubs compared to our metro SANFL clubs.

IIRC you must be registered with a SANFL club to be drafted these days. Once upon a time, Peter Plus nominated for the draft, LMAO. Also, AFL clubs were allegedly hiding players away in country comps - Ashley McIntosh to the WCE rings a few bells.

Yes, Pseudo, they get a lot of money for each player drafted.

As for the survey, you want them to get a trophy for a survey result

Yes, Pseudo, they get a lot of money for each player drafted.

The article, and my rhetorical question, was specifically about being the best at developing talent; not about the drafting of individual players.

As for the survey, you want them to get a trophy for a survey result

Boo to after-the-event irony, Pseudo.

I think Dogwatcher's question over-rides that, (fella) ;)

Quantify 'lot'?

Wasn't this amnount significantly reduced recently?

Why do the AFL get to set the amount paid to the clubs that produce the players?

Why don't SANFL clubs get money when a de-listed player goes back to them, improves and gets re-drafted?

In short, because changing those things would benefit Australian Rules Football and not the competition the AFL administer.

I'm not sure of the exact amounts, mate, but I'll try to find out.

I think the changes weren't mainly to the amounts paid, but as to when they were paid. For example, it used to be that it was paid in several stages:- draft, first game, 10th game, 50th game, or something similar. I think it's now been simplified and more is paid up front, but again I'll tr to find out.

Why does the AFL get to set the amount? Possibly because they're the Australian Football League which has been appointed to run Australian Football and the state leagues are affiliated bodies. Seems fairly normal to me.

As for the delisted player scenario, it rarely happens, but I agree with you that a fee should be paid. Campaign for it.

Would seem to be an alternate to the current funding structure if the transfer fee is increased. If they want the local clubs to be feeder comps, adequate compensation for all the development work they do would seem fair*.

*assuming an 'not for profit' organisation that pays its CEO a couple of million dollars understands fairness. cough.
