Went to all the homies and fantastic atmosphere, including last night. Not sure I would be turning up to see a franchise play. But it might also be all about TV rights as well. Unfortunately it is not all about us cricket lovers.

I'd rather be supporting an SA based team than an Adelaide based team but with the payrises all the players across the board will be getting and all the extra money that will be flowing into local cricket I think it will be a positive thing.

I see what you're saying here but endless streams of income won't necessarily translate into a more palatable product. I just can't see 28000 turning up to support a franchise. Will the local press adopt it as feverishly? If there's no passion can it be considered a success? Additionally there was talk in the press over the weekend about where priorities lie in regards to injuries. Who gets the call over a player on T20 duty who might have a bit of a niggle. The T20 team pushing for a final's berth or his shield side?
There's a lot of unanswered questions to go with the questionable decision to scrap a successful formula.
If nothing else it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Here's Shane Watsons views of expanding the 20/20 season, and shortening the Sheffield Shield season:

Melbourne and Sydney will each host two teams in next summer's new Big Bash League, and the Ryobi Cup will be pruned to squeeze the revamped Twenty20 competition into the calendar. Cricket Australia's board decided on Tuesday that Etihad Stadium in Melbourne's Docklands and Sydney's Homebush Stadium would join the six major Test grounds in headquartering Twenty20 teams, with Geelong's bid rejected.

Told you it was only a matter of time.
Was reported today that the franchises will chase mainly indian imports so the indian tv companies will buy the rights, creating more money for CA. I will give it 2 years before the indians are running the show and demand matches be played at prime time in india. India is about 5 hrs behind us so we will have games starting at 10 at night to satisfy the tv rights.

Think next year will see a dramatic drop in crowds attending these matches as i cant see why anyone would bother supporting a team that has NO history and NO relevance.

This is Packers WSC all over again.
For the reasons you mention above you'll only get curious onlookers to start with but if the product comes good they'll flock through the gates.

ANZ Stadium has been used by NSW for their T20 matches for several years now, and all future T20 international in Sydney will be played at ANZ Stadium. With this new comp, it looks like the SCG will be making a comeback as a T20 venue.

I don't think the crowds will be largely affected by the new comp. The past couple of years have seen just how fickle crowds can be in this comp. Our crowds remained around 17K with our two successful seasons, the Victorian crowds plummeted from 43 000 last year to 13 000 this year.

BT, that is what happens when you go from winning, almost all the time, to loosing most of the time, happens everywhere. In SA we have been lucky, two very competitive years, hence very good crowds. This comp will be all about TV rights, yes sure we will get crowds bigger than Ryobi or SS, but as long as the TV companies put up the money, this will keep going.

From todays Indaily email:

A FEW million dollars just popped into the South Australian Cricket Association’s finances, with the prospect of an even bigger payday as Twenty20 cricket’s domestic expansion continues.

The windfall, which follows Cricket Australia’s confirmation this week of eight state-based franchises in the Big Bash League (BBL), comes as the SACA continues to negotiate with football chiefs over dual footy-cricket residency of Adelaide Oval.

Cricket Australia’s board meeting last Tuesday approved a format where the local associations can sell up to 49 per cent of their franchise.

Financial analysts have estimated the value of each franchise as being “up to $50 million” with Adelaide at the lower end of estimates, but certainly above $20 million.

SACA chief executive John Harnden told Indaily his committee was already considering selling part of the franchise.

“Like other states SACA is currently considering opportunities to sell a minority share in the new team to a commercial partner,” Harnden said. “While there is strong interest, the price will ultimately be determined by the market.”

The Indian reports say NSW and Victoria will have Indian part-owners as they have already sold shares to corporations for around $60 million in return for profits from the eight-team Twenty20 tournament starting in December.

Sydney’s Daily Telegraph also reports that NSW Cricket has set up a separate business entity, known as Blues Inc, to run the state’s Twenty20 franchises with Indian investors wanting a 49 per cent share of the company for $30 million.

Australia's cricketers have become free agents in Twenty20 and can begin signing up with the new Big Bash League franchises.

One thing they did agree on was a reduction in the number of state contracts, with each side having 14 to 18 spots available, down from the existing range of 16 to 20. Base contract levels will also dip slightly, but players shouldn't be short-changed thanks to the promise of extra money from their new Twenty20 deals.

The Big Bash League sides will have to work under a salary cap, but there will be no maximum contract figure for an individual player. Sides will be able to sign up to two overseas players in a squad of 18.

- Im even less in favour of this new competition/model now

Tasmania have promoted the assistant coach Allister de Winter from the ranks to helm the coaching of the Hobart Hurricanes Twenty20 team in next summer's expanded Big Bash League.

de Winter, a candidate for the Australian bowling coach position that ultimately went to Craig McDermott, has re-signed with Tasmanian cricket for two years for a role that will see him pay particular attention to the Hurricanes under the oversight of the head coach Tim Coyle.

Australian cricket's playing and marketing imperatives are again colliding, this time over the matter of Test players taking part in the early rounds of the expanded Big Bash League.

As part of the push to sell the new league and its eight manufactured teams to the public, Cricket Australia wants all of its centrally-contracted players to take part in the first round of the competition, tentatively scheduled for December 16 to 20.

However an agreement is yet to be reached between CA management, marketing and coaching staff over the issue of how to use the time between the end of the New Zealand Test series on December 13 in Hobart and the start of the India series on December 26 with the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

I got an idea. Get them to play first class cricket so they are fully prepared for the Indians!

Trevor Bayliss has been snapped up by the Sydney Sixers after being overlooked for the job as coach of New South Wales. Bayliss lost out to Anthony Stuart in the race to become the mentor of the Blues, but he has picked up a two-year deal to coach the Sixers, who will be based at the SCG and are one of the two Sydney sides for the new-look Big Bash League.
