One of your best articles yet, Rucci. Spot on. Both clubs have been patient enough. Both clubs are operating at a loss because of the Sanfl. The Sanfl has lost their right to own these licences. Demetriou needs to harden up and take these licences away from the Sanfl and put them directly in the hands of the clubs. Or is Demetriou not interested in allowing the SA clubs to be on an equal playing field to the Victorian cubs - maybe that's it!

Doesn't that person look at the "draw", or where the GF is played, or what the biggest honour of the comp is called and where its always held, where the tribunal is based at if a non Victotian based player wants to contest his hearing in person, where and what clubs have all the blockbuster games etc etc.
Does this idiot even realize that if a player has played 1VFL game they qualify for an AFL funded "hard times" scheme, yet if someone has played 300 plus games in the SANFL during the same period they qualify for f-all.

sjt wrote:I think Rucci's articles are doing damage to the AFL "brand'. He's creating a backlash to the AFL as SANFL followers, step up to support the SANFL, which he persists in "trashing". Les Steven's letter to CDFC supporters was a response to the "media beat up", and obviously one "journalist" (loose term) in particular. If he hadn't been bagging the SANFL so much, maybe the AFL teams would be getting more sympathy.
I must admit, I was a Crow's member for about the first five years, before it all felt too commercial. I even didn't mind the Port team, (but not the supporters ;) ). Now, I've been "put off". Despite, living walking distance to the Oval and consistently being offered free tickets, I haven't bothered to see a game in the last couple of years.

I though the following a good post on the CDFC website. Posted by "dogfish":

Comparisons.

I go to AAMI to watch an AFL game. Pay to park.
I walk to the gate and someone is trying to sell raffle tickets for the club as it's crying poor (Strange when players are on 6 figure salaries). I then buy my family tickets, which are over priced. I squeeze the family in the middle of the row to take our seats. The kids complain, I'm Hungry or toilet etc. So out we go, disturbing people again. 20 minutes later I am back in my seat. $100 gone.

Through the game I wonder what is going on with all the kicking backwards etc. No one seems to kick straight at goal. I see a good mark from the opposition and say so quietly to myself, only to have half a dozen old bags turn around and scream at me that I should go home. Now i'm busting for a piss, but don't want to disturb everyone again so I put up with it until half time I don't hear any discussions on how a player is improving, struggling. No comments on a good run of play.No concerns about players being underdone.

Its simple. Cheer if we got the ball. Boo if they got the ball.

No opposition supporters around to chat to. Can't wonder off and have a beer with a mate a couple of rows over.

The whole spectacle seems so distant.
The crowd is a herd of sheep.

I have been to AFL games in Brisbane and Melbourne, and it's the same. Dull.

Playford Alive.

I park across the road for free. I give the Salvos a donation at the gate. ( I think they are more deserving than the ticket collectors for the AFL clubs) The kids get in free. I say see ya later and they wonder off with $5 each to meet up with their mates.

I can sit where I want, talk to who I want. Grab a bite to eat while still watching the game. The discussions are interesting as people know the players. I can go and listen to the huddle. See the injured/ retired players kicking a footy with their kids at quarter time. Banter between supporters of the opposition. Hear their thoughts on how their team is going. I can even compliment the opposition, or god forbid say they should have got a free without being screamed at. Then at the end be home within 20min of the final siren.

It's all interactive. I feel a part of the club. I think my membership is important, The players have a laugh, chat with the supporters. They are real people with real jobs just like us. Never do I feel I am being ripped off.

The glitz and glam of the AFL is a full con job if I ever did see one. You can sit and stare at it from a seat at the ground, or get exactly the same experience on your own lounge watching it on the box. This is why even though I get free AFL tickets with my CDFC membership I am still not interested, and I haven't heard of anyone around me saying they use them either.

agree with others an accurate assement of every team in our competition (time getting home would be different for different people depending on which ground you are at & where you live, having said that it's only 45 minutes doing the noarlunga-elizabeth double) which play for the people whereas elsewhere they play to earn a living & really couldn't give 'two hoots' about much else
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

There's 19 now.

Also, I just posted ;

"When David Smorgon supposedly "raises his eyebrows", should we do likewise in return? Given he presides over a club founded in 1883 with one premiership in 1954. This is despite having a reserves side, a better stadium deal a corporate structure we're told by some, we should emulate, and the lowest footy dept. spend of any AFL club (yet they have finished top four in the past 3 years). With all these "advantages", they still managed to have a debt exceeding $5 million in October last year.Hmmm

No doubt, it will be censored out because it's so prevocative  l

Not exactlly true. They weren't admitted to the VFL until 1925. Prior to that, they won 9 VFA flags between 1898 and 1924.

Love Dogfish's comment.

Love going to the Ammo's. Yes I am a director of my club and enjoy the atmosphere.

Can arrive at the ground at any time and get a free car park around the ground or close by in a side street the kids get to crawl around with a play ground at the top of the oval when they get older.

Best BBQ in the league. Bacon, Burger, Egg & Onion sandwich all for $4 and a can of beer for $3.50. Spend no nmore thean $15 at the a game. Have my usual spot on the wing-flank members side with other past players. We meet in the same spot every home game.

Half time we have afternoon tea and invite the opposition board and volunteers and we have a good chat and exchange ideas.

After the game opposition players and supporters all come in for a drink and a chat. Pretty well much all teams get on well.

The style of play is more open but some coaches do try to bring in some AFL tactics.

Enjoy my day at the ammos whether at home or away.

I don't mind the occassional trip to the AFL try to get the MCG at least once a year to watch Richmond play. But it is very expensive I have my Richmond membership but my wife isn't a member so it costs a bit for her to get in.

Free entry to the ammos is great anyone can turn up for free and it doesn't costs them a fortune for the day and their families

Damn, you're right and I can't go back and edit it. I should have written one VFL premiership. Lucky my posts never get past Rucci. Then again, it's in line with his articles of putting up half truths, to support a point.

What I also left out was that now they have fantastic facilities, hence part of the reason for the debt. A bit like a Rucci story, leave out the parts that don't support my argument.

Don't just look at the loans section.

Need to also take into account the Cash and Cash Equivalents line on the Balance Sheet. This has gone from $5.252m in 2009 to $0.906m in 2010.

Loans went down by around $250k over that period as well.

Tried to find more of these before 2009 to do some more meaningful comparisons but no luck.

Also wanted to compare with the Crows but couldn't find any of them online.

That's ok - you can get the 2008 figures from the comparison column in the 2009 report.

If you've got 2007 then you should be able to get all the figures from 2006 to 2010.

Would you be able to post the link to 2007 on here?

Although rucci may favour port slightly over the crows i find his reporting to be fair and accurate. not sure why people get on his case, if you dont like his opinion dont read the advertiser.

Any examples? Is this meant for the best jokes section?
Seriously, sure everyone can have an opinion and very often his opinion will differ for example to mine. However as chief football writer, I don't believe all his articles should be "opinion" orientated, they should be factually based. When reporting on situations, the facts from both perspectives should be offered. The problem arises when he puts his opinion forward as fact.

This morning there is an article about the declining popularity of the AFL game in South Australia. No mention of dastardly SANFL clubs anywhere.
This is probably more relevant information in this article than Rucci has managed to produce all this year.
He even, albeit briefly, touches on Port's questionable management efforts such as their erratic marketing. All very brief though, as if this is all in the too hard basket.

I prefer going to the SANFL than the AWFul. You can watch your team play, have a beer on the hill, banter with the opposition supporters while the game is on and then afterwards have a drink with them.

Cost is a good price for entry and food. You see the occasional fights in a game and watch the footy the way it is meant to be played.
