SANFL and its clubs have a century plus headstart on any local, major-sport league in the world.
And its better for it, but I wouldn't boast about it because other the 6 billion and bit people on Earth

Very true, it is because of the unique circumstances surrounding the history of the SANFL, plus the isolated nature of major cities in Australia, that has resulted in the SANFL holding this record.

However, it is still an interesting, quirky stat which I believe the SANFL should use when marketing our competition.

I fully concur Ecky.
The VFL (pre 1990) used to use this line during the '70s & '80s and as a kid I took
a great deal of pride in this, even though no-one else gave a stuff.

Ecky, maybe you and a couple of others need to address the world does not end at Pt Wakfield to the north, Hackam to the south West lakes to the west or Skye to east.

Congrats to SANFL. Well spotted stat.
If the AvFL have anything to do with it, i'd say the top spot is under threat.
Not sure if Elizabeth counts as Adelaide though :?: :?:

As for the wider stats, certainly in the premiership the averages will vary widley year on year depending on which clubs are in and which clubs are out. This year little clubs like Watford with gates of 16,000 will affect the overall avarage, whereas likely promotees such as Derby and Birmingham with attendances of 30k plus will boost the overall avarage. In addition Man U has just completed the next faze of expansion taking the capacity to 87k and Arsenal have just moved into their new stadium taking the capacity from 35k to 67k. Add this to the increased local derby matches in Birmingham, with Villa, BCFC and possibleyWest Brom, and I think the averages will be higher for 2007/8.

Having said that, your point is solid and would have caried even more weight pre AFL invasion. There's no doubt Australians are passionate about Aussie Rules and sport in general. As a pom, I look at your unbelievable performances in the Olympics, for a nation of only 15m or so (not sure exactly how many), you're world rankings in so many sports and your ability to 'punch above your weight' deserves applause from the every quarter.

Actually Coorong, I thought I had been quite "worldly" in this thread :?

Wellllllll...this could all change if the SANFL admits the Tassie Devils eh?
Do we really want to lose this record? ;)

Great thread.

Amazing that AFL is 3rd in the world. What a sport. What a sporting public.

WE are blessed as passionate SANFL followers to have such a vibrant state league. Leagues like ours have been ruined all over the world (so has ours) due to national comps but we stand at number one. I just get a horrible feeling that one day the vics are gonna change that tho.
Never give a sucker an even break

Nor ban a user for an acceptable topic of discussion.

"Baby on board". Why dont you put a sign on ur car saying "adult on board" or "car stereo in use"?

Absolutely right Dasher. EPL has competely f%$&ked up the English league. TV and money talks I'm afraid. It's a real shame as the real essence of the game lies with the state / local competitions IMHO

I think the point is that even in the face of "the elite" National competitions, the SANFL still has a loyal fan base.
