REVIEW Sturt v Eagles - Round 11

Postby Jimmy » Sun Jun 12, 2011 5:39 pm

Robbed today by the sounds of it from all who saw that last free kick, so annoying when a great game is ruined by the maggots. Dont often comment on the umpiring impacting a game but that was ridiculous. Looks like the AFL ways are spreading through the umpiring system in SA.

Sturt 10.8
Eags 10.14

very proud of the boys today, Hansen a great first game. Unlucky Sturt. Well played lads. Oh well, always next week.

So one umpiring decision over 4 quarters cost sturt the game.

Personally, while all this attention is focused on the AFL ruining the SANFL, I reckon it's just as likely that the SANFL could ruin itself through adopting AFL style rules...

To be fair Jimmy the umpires paid that type of free kick all frigging day. I counted several instances of where it was unnecessary and in the end it decides the result of the game.

Eagles had plenty of chances to bury Sturt but they could find the big sticks. To me who hasn't seen may Sturt games at all this year made too many school boy errors like fumbles and not hitting targets. Some of the worst Offenders were AFL listed players

Well done WWT, outmarked us all over the field today. Sturt are good when we put pressure on the ball carrier, when we don't we're shocking. As was the umpiring display today, Sturt should've got 2 free kicks inside their F50 but not paid, WWT get the most ridiculous free for an in the back during a marking contest. James McLeay with both hands up in the air puts a bit of a hip on the WWT player who's infront, more of a block than a push then McLeay marks the ball. In the back awarded to WWT.
Disgraceful umpiring for both teams, what a joke.

Turn it up!

Umpire had to pay that free kick to Stapes if they were to be consistent.

Thought we were 4 goal better team on the day , didn't take our opportunities.

Sturt had a fair crack but played counter attack all day , which nearly paid off.

We need to be less cute and more direct to the big fellas in the forward line.

It was a dirty win but someone's got to do it.

Collected a few silver spoons on the way out of Unley , bit tarnished though.

hands in the back against McLeay, Happened right in front of me on the Northern Grandstand side flank with scores level. Definitely no hands involved, Eagles player was worked under the ball with the hip. That type of free was paid all day to both sides

The controlling umpire is new to league ranks and should have a spell back in the 2's IMO after stuffing that one up.

I disagree Heater, there were heaps of soft in the back free kicks paid during marking contests, not many to Sturt, 2 for the Eagles in the 1st 1/4 in their F50. I think it was McIntyre in the last 1/4 pushed in the back while trying to mark the ball during a lead, 30 out in the pocket, nothing. I don't mind if they want to interpret it soft on the day but be bloody consistent.

For those at the game, how did Ben Hansen go? His stats looked very good. Played mainly in defence or midfield as well??

Even if it was a terrible decision im sure Sturt got a decision which went their way throughout.

Im sure a Sturt missed a get-able shot at goal, im sure a Sturt player missed a target and hit an Eagles player. I dont see anyonoe blaming them for the loss today.

Thanks Cutterman, sounds like an excellent debut for the young lad. If he continues his form, must be some sort of chance of getting drafted.

I referred to both teams as crap... I think it's implied they didn't help themselves.

... my beef is with the umpire interfering in the game.

Sturt are quite capable of losing on their own, they don't need help.

Torrens merely proved they are overrated.
