School sports days where "children are not competing against each other but against themselves"

The whole point of a race is to win the friggen thing

Yep, its everyone wins a prize sports day. But depending on how fast you run, how high you jump or how far you throw depends on the colour ribbon you get..

Does it really matter? It's hard enough trying to get some kids to be active at all these days. If they get a ribbon at the day, good on them, might encourage them to do a bit more. The kids who take it seriously (I was one of them) still know how they fare based on the colour ribbon they get.

My 5 y.o was leading his grades sprint at sports day recently, he went arse up big time and just about everyone went past him, he got back up but finished well back in the pack, he was devastated the poor bugger, pulled his hat down over his face and didn't want to do anything for the remainder of the day. I was shattered to hear of it as he had been looking forward to it for ages and had been practicing constantly out the back going from fence to fence.
It made me feel worse as he blamed the shoes I brought him the night before, a lesson to be learnt "Do not buy your kids velcro's if they have a big race coming up".
He is the ultimate competitor, he's the youngest of 5 and all of his siblings make him earn everything, even a spot on the couch at times, he'll even give the 17 y.o a punch in the gob if he's giving him a hard time..........Gold.

Just having a bit of a think about what you posted Pag, I see where you are coming from but society has hindered us in getting the best out of our children. My lad was playing under 8's footy when he was 4 and was one of the better players, the CDJFL forced us to take him to another club to play under 6's as they wouldn't allow under 6's to play under 8's.
He is still stuck in under 6's this season where he is becoming very bored and frustrated with it, I've had to cap him at 3 goals per game and he ends up having to handball the ball in the goal square to a kid that isn't even watching only to see the opposition pick it up and run away with it, it's frustrating as a parent watching my son get frustrated with sport when he's trying the best he can to involve others.

I'm all for that mate, if a kid has the ability then try to develop it as best you can. I was talking about the idea of giving out participation awards/trophies. As a PE teacher who deals with the frustrations of kids just genuinely not wanting to be active due to embarrasment, nerves etc, the thought of not giving kids participation awards on Sports Days just goes against everything we are trying to push (ie a healthy lifestyle).

How many young kids at Smithfield are given participation trophies at the end of the year? or vouchers on a Sunday? Some kids play all year so they can get that trophy for their efforts. Kids with talent are always going to go further, and we should encourage them to develop their talents (ie playing up grads if warranted), but it's the kids without the talent that I worry about, who may end up dislkining or hating being physically active in general.

Every financial kid gets a participation trophy mate and every child in the under 6's that attends the weekly awards gets something, even if I have to do a late dash to the bar for a latecomer.
It just peeves me a little that society forces the introduction of rules that limits some childrens progress, they aren't robots and some of them take it upon themselves to better themselves. The lad gets held back and begins to lose interest because of this when he spends ALL of his spare time with a footy in his hand, not playing video games or watching tv.

Same with every club I think, and participation trophies are an excellent thing. Those kids who probably know they aren't going to win a B&F are rewarded for their efforts. It's awesome. My school footy team did it last year and some of their faces were priceless.

The issue is the same at the other end of the spectrum, where your son is. I totally agree that he should have the opportunity to further develop himself, that was probably me 18 years ago as well and I would've cracked the shits if someone told me I couldn't play too. If it's the CDJFL that has made that call, then it's a terrible call on their part.

Im all for giving every kid a participation ribbon etc etc, but to not award a 1st 2nd 3rd in a race or competition etc i think is wrong..

Using the football reference, give every kid a trophy, but all the same... NO B&F, NO Leading goal kicker etc etc..

the silly thing is Kids know if they won or not anyway, same with footy comps with no scores, the kids keep track of the score

gotta start teaching kids that sports is like life - there are winners and there are losers

I completely garee with that, although I also believe it's important to do so in such a way that those who don't win are enticed enough to continue participation.

But I think it's very important to teach younger people, that unfortunately, you do compete often in life and to the victor goes the spoils.
