Tell me about it. I hear that every day from someone at my workplace.

Even worse when everyone who competes gets a ribbon.
In my day we had to earn our ribbons!!!

Does it really matter? It's hard enough trying to get some kids to be active at all these days. If they get a ribbon at the day, good on them, might encourage them to do a bit more. The kids who take it seriously (I was one of them) still know how they fare based on the colour ribbon they get.mickey wrote:Drop Bear wrote:mickey wrote:School sports days where "children are not competing against each other but against themselves"

Yep, its everyone wins a prize sports day. But depending on how fast you run, how high you jump or how far you throw depends on the colour ribbon you get..

My 5 y.o was leading his grades sprint at sports day recently, he went arse up big time and just about everyone went past him, he got back up but finished well back in the pack, he was devastated the poor bugger, pulled his hat down over his face and didn't want to do anything for the remainder of the day. I was shattered to hear of it as he had been looking forward to it for ages and had been practicing constantly out the back going from fence to fence.
It made me feel worse as he blamed the shoes I brought him the night before, a lesson to be learnt "Do not buy your kids velcro's if they have a big race coming up".
He is the ultimate competitor, he's the youngest of 5 and all of his siblings make him earn everything, even a spot on the couch at times, he'll even give the 17 y.o a punch in the gob if he's giving him a hard time..........Gold.

As a PE teacher who deals with the frustrations of kids just genuinely not wanting to be active due to embarrasment, nerves etc, the thought of not giving kids participation awards on Sports Days just goes against everything we are trying to push (ie a healthy lifestyle).
How many young kids at Smithfield are given participation trophies at the end of the year? or vouchers on a Sunday? Some kids play all year so they can get that trophy for their efforts. Kids with talent are always goign to go further, and that's awesome, but it's the kids without the talent that I worry about.

gotta start teaching kids that sports is like life - there are winners and there are losers
