Last time the AFL told PAFC the SANFL had to sort it out. And they attempted to to the tune of $4m or whatever it was.

Now it sounds like the SANFL are saying it's time for the AFL to step in financially because the SANFL now too are maxed out debt wise. Presumably the falling attendances and on field form of the Crows aren't helping the financial situation.

So the AFL step in with a grant as they do regularly with other Melb based clubs (they call them equalisation payments) and the SANFL take over direct control of the PAFC. Is that what is really going on here?

It's interesting how hard the SANFL are fighting to hold onto that AFL licence. It must still be more profitable for the SANFL to keep it than to let it go but big lump sum required to clear Port's debts seems beyond them.

Interesting times.

It's time for the Crows and Power to merge. They will become Port Adelaide.

I agree that there is only so much you can kick someone when they are down, real worrying for the future of SA footy.

I am listening the press conference online. I think it's about some sort of medium term assistance from the AFL to bridge the gap until Port and the Crows can get to the Adelaide Oval. It seems a bit of a fizzer from what the speculation was.

There's another announcement due in 2 weeks after the AFL's position on how it will help is clear.

The simple fact that a franchise needs a serious bail out after a mere 14 years in the competition is diabolical.

Whatever financial modeling was presented as part of the licence process was obviously very optimistic and well off the mark.

You're right Ginger however I suspect that any modelling that may have been done on Crows crowds in 1997 would also now be a fair way off. In better times the cash cow that was the Crows could have covered off Port's issues. Now we seem to have a perfect storm which includes some sort of protest vote against AAMI and the style and quality of football being put on by both teams.

This season the Crows and Port are taking it in turns to lose to the bottom team at AAMI. That's not a great advertisement to get others to go down and watch them live.

Thats the big factor at the moment. Both teams are experiencing nice membership numbers but crowds are horrible as both are playing a very average brand of footy. Success starts happening and crowds return. But the licencing set up with port at the moment is concerning to say the least.
