Agree, when they fall because of the fences, but in this case and one other they fell on the flat, not while jumping - could happen to any horse in a paddock

it does dutchy & more horses die in paddocks than at race meetings from various things such as snake bite, spider bite, running through a barbed wire fence & cutting an artery or two, i know of a very good pacer in the mid 80's called barrarata trained by steve allen who was spelling & got stuck in the mud & died.....but we don't hear of these things do we ?

Accidents are accidents - some can be avoided and some can't. Jumps racing subjects horses to a higher and unreasonable risk of death and/or injury and should be discontinued.

just watching the great southern steeplechase from mornington now, it used to be a figure 8 race but it doesn't look like they do that now

I base my views on this report published by Racing Victoria that, on page 134, has a table that shows from 2001 to 2008 one in every 33 horses that started a jumps race fell, and one in every 125 that started died.

And then there's this one published in the Equine Veterinary Journal, that concludes that the risk of fatality in jumps races is around 19 times that in flat races.

As I see it this high risk of death or injury to horses is why people object to jumps racing.

Thank you Fish as i stated before i enjoy racing,and everyone is entitled to their own opinion but some of the comments are being deflected away from jumps racing and the problems they are facing and instead talk about different ways horses die.After the Warnambool debacle,i personally hope this part of racing will cease to exist soon.

I assume u are referring to the horse that jumpen the perimeter fence into the people???

How is that directly connected to jump racing apart from being in a jumps race???
many horses in the past have been spooked in flat races and have jumped the rails or boundary fences and ended up where they are not sposed to be..

Well said "mickey" the trouble is people all over the place dont understand horse racing you hear of horses crashing back into the mounting yard or through the outside fence and nothing is said as it is flat racing i enjoy jumps racing and hope it continues for a long time.

Fair point Mickey i shouldnt have blamed what happened at Warnambool to jumps racing,because the issue at the start was about the amount of horses being put down whilst competing in jumps races.

As I recall the horse that jumped into the people was riderless and had lost its jockey at a jump.

I can't recall this making the news but I stumbled across this June 8th article in The Australian about a Bill that has been introduced to ban jumps racing in SA.

THE Greens have introduced a bill to the South Australian parliament to ban jumps racing.

Upper house MP Tammy Franks introduced the bill today with her proposed legislation making the necessary changes to the Animal Welfare Act.

Ms Franks said jumps racing was legalised cruelty.

"With four horse deaths this season in South Australia alone and another 10 races to go before the season finishes, the macabre reality is that it is almost certain that more horses will be injured or killed before this bill can stop it," she said.

"Australians universally express their outrage at animal cruelty, yet until now jumps racing has flown below the radar.

"We no longer condone or accept cruel activities such as dog or cock fighting as legitimate entertainment in Australia.

"If the parliament has any conscience it will not be long before jumps racing joins these outdated relics in the dustbin of history."

The bill will be debated later this year.

I'm not sure what chance the Bill has of getting up but I'd guess not much chance unless one or both of the major parties support it...

Shame on you for making statements about banning jumps racing without having any idea of the repercussions, the fact is if jumps races were banned tomorrow hundreds of horses would end up at the knackery and get a bullet in the brain. Doesn't matter who you shame or what you think you must accept this as a fact, now knowing this my question to you is

& in the future, every slow racehorse with a bit of potential over the jumps would end up in a dogs guts.
How about a happy compromise ? The poster boys for ending the jumps industry are the ones that pull the trigger, be a few days work but hey. Starting with veganboy who fronts up on all the media.
