I am so proud of our players & the club today.
The walking wounded - literally.

That no. 57 (47 after his injury)... what a leader.

This club gets continually bagged by all & sundary but keep coming back & showing great character - we cop s**t for the merge, we cop s**t for the GF losses, we cop s**t for having very few supporters but we keep coming back, time after time.

If clubs are built on character... then the last 20 years has been full of just that.

Today's victory against all of the odds, sets the club up for the remainder of the year & a tilt @ our 3rd Flag... Centrals are the team to beat, no question, but Woodville West Torrens FC has shown today that they are there abouts.

Godden deserves some credit but 2 things 'shone through' for me today...

Our backline - led by Macca (who must now be @ least equal favorite with James Allen for the medal @ this early stage) - they were superb.

Parry in ruck - he is the BEST big man in the competition IMHO

Go You Eagles!!! :D

West were always up against it with Fergusson pulling out with a broken finger and probably a few home town decisions didnt help.
Good to see A. Hartlett resuming in the ressies today.

Mackenzie's zoning in westies forward line was impressive. West should have manned him up. He is a champion player and controlled play from the backlines setting up players like Jarrad and Powell all day long.

Morris was fantastic and I thought thompson played one of his best games in defence for the bloods. Pretty even performances from everyone else in both sides and a tricky wind making scoring a little more tricky than perhaps it may have seen to those at home watching the game on the box.

Shattered, absolutely shattered.

Literally 5 seconds from a win. What's worse is how from a set play (boundary throw in) that the eagles were allowed the space at the back of the pack for Lewis to score.

Thought Collins was at fault all day for not making McKenzie accountable across the backline and for allowing Lewis the freedom of running around unchecked all day.

After leading all day then falling behind well into the last Q the Eagles got up with the last kick of the day to beat a gallant Bloods at Woodville Oval today. At the 25min mark of the last Westies had scrambled to a 7 pt lead and looked home with the siren about to go. The Eags then booted goals at the 26 and 29 min mark (they had only kicked one gl since half time) to win after the longest Q of footy most of us can remember. Final score WWT 8.9, WA 7.10.
Westies were unsettled from the start with Ferguson dropping out and Moran took Grocke and Lobbe played CHF. Motlop came in for his first game.
The game was hard to watch as there was a lot of pressure from both teams forcing elementary mistakes. Westies disposal was terrible with loopy handballs and high kicks putting players under unnecessary pressure. The Eagles tackled well and ran down West players to earn frees and their disposal was much better. Having said this the game was played almost exclusively between the 2 half back lines. Only eight goals were kicked by half time (WWT 5.2, WA 3.4) and only one goal was kicked in the whole third Q. The last Q was Westies best as they surged to the lead at the half way mark but they had wasted many opportunities to put themselves further in front. Moran dropped a simple chest mark in the goal square and 6 players kicked points that could easily have been goals.
To their credit the Eagles never gave up and with injuries themselves they played out the game better to win a tight contest by 5 pts with a snap by Scott Lewis in the last 5 seconds of the game.
The umpiring was decidedly ordinary throughout but not necessarily favouring either side. The ABC stats had 19 frees to WWT and 15 to WA. As you would expect the Eagles dominated the air with 98 marks to 65 including ten marks inside 50 compared to West’s 5. Both teams had 17 shots for goal but West let themselves down when it mattered in the last Q.
Throw a blanket over Steven Moris, Daniel Caire and big Silvester for our best player. Blesing and K Thompson also stood out in a game for the backmen. Ezard J fought hard all day as did the cool, calm and collected Shane Birss. We had 7 goalkickers and the lack of forward options remains a major worry. Lobbe and Webb struggle to take a grab and cannot seem to keep the ball in the fwd area. Motlop showed some good things including a lovely goal in the 2Q but needed the run. Ryan Willets got us back in the game in the last with his strong field play but battled against Parry all day.
The 2s won 14.9 to 10.5. Hartlett ran the game out but did seem to have a bruised rt thigh at the end.

Both sides started the game with some good players pulling out*. Ferguson for the Bloods, Rowntree the big one for the Eagles, plus Allmond and Hentschel.

Half way through the first quarter, looked around, and there were plenty for players in both teams forward lines, and some around the ball, so thought this is okay, we might be in for a good, more open game of footy, but after that both teams played plenty behind the ball and unfortunately the spectacle was a bit ordinary.

LEH, you are dead right about the character the club showed today. We continually hit back right when it looked like we were gone - five minutes into the second quarter, during the last when West hit the front and we got the lead back, then trailing by 7 points with about 2 minutes left and the ball out of bounds deep in West's forward pocket.

One criticism is the way we used the wind. Very rarely, apart from Tiller's goal, were we prepared to have a shot for goal from around 50-55.

Curious about when the final siren went. Sitting in the outer it seemed like the West player kicked it a split second before, was heading for the behinds, but was a wobbler so could have bounced anywhere, and the Eagles trainer stopped it about 10 metres out from the goal. None of the players seemed to fussed with stopping it, so presuming the siren must have gone before, but it didn't seem like that on the outer side.

Couldn't hear the siren all day and I was standing behind the west coaches box so not sure if it went before or after the kick from Willits. Looked like it would have scored a point though if legal so not worried.

Fergy a massive loss for us. Jarrad and McKenzie killed us again. Our back 6 led by Morris were sensational and were quite comfortably our best 6 players.

Huge test against Norwood next week. Hopefully Brad Fisher, Fergsuon and Piasente are available.

Good to see Hartlett back in the 2s. Kicked a goal that would have gone almost 100 metres in the 3rd. It just kept rolling and rolling.
